Lord Jeff Squash Teams Fall to National Powerhouse Trinity College

AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College men’s and women’s squash teams hosted national powerhouse and NESCAC rival Trinity College this evening at Davenport Courts. On the women’s side, the Bantams took a 9-0 sweep without dropping a single game, while the Amherst men’s squad was able to grab a few games in their 9-0 defeat.

This evening marked the debut of a new line-up for the Lord Jeff women headlined by a pair of first-years moving into the one and two seeds on the feature court. Classmates Alexandra Dalglish (Fort Washington, PA) and Hayley Milbourn (Baltimore, MD) each fell to their Bantam opponents in their new positions.

Amherst senior co-captain Libby Martin (St. Louis, MO) played well in the third match, as she took a team-high number of points from Trinity’s Emily Paton. Martin ultimately fell 2-9, 5-9, 1-9 in three straight games, but fought hard to lead the team.

In men’s action, the 11th-ranked Lord Jeffs were unable to steal a single match-up from the nation’s top team. Junior Brian Warner (Atlanta, GA) played very well in the number eight match-up, taking a 3-1 defeat to Trinity’s William Burchfield. Warner battled back to take a 10-9 win in the fourth game.

In an unfortunate incident, Amherst junior Ben Bishop (Seattle, WA) took a first game win, and was leading 2-0 in the second game before pulling a muscle. Bishop played two more points before having to retire due to the injury.

Both Amherst teams fell to 1-1 on the season, while both Trinity sides improve to 4-0. The Lord Jeffs return to action on Thursday at Tufts.
