Amherst Teams Place Second at Little III Championships

Melissa Moulton
Senior captain Melissa Moulton was the lone Amherst player to go 2-0 on the day.
MIDDLETOWN, CT – The Amherst College men’s and women’s squash teams each finished in second place at the 2009 Little Three Championships held at Wesleyan University. The Lord Jeff squads cruised to wins over the host Cardinals in the morning matches before falling to national powerhouse Williams in the afternoon.

On the men’s side, eight of Amherst’s wins over Wesleyan came by a 3-0 margin, with senior co-captain Ben Bishop (Seattle, WA) defeating Dale Kobrin in four games in the No. 3 matchup. Fellow senior co-captain Jerome Giovinazzo (Staten Island, NY) cruised to a 9-3, 9-1, 9-0 win as the Jeffs’ No. 2 player, while Drew Blacker (Summit, NJ) earned a 9-5, 9-4, 10-8 win in the No. 1 spot to round out the top three matches.

The men’s match against the Ephs was a much different story, as 10th-ranked Williams had little trouble with its archrival. Giovinazzo put up the best fight for Amherst, falling 9-6, 9-4, 9-6 to George Miller in a tight No. 2 match.

Senior captain Melissa Moulton (Oreland, PA) was the lone Amherst player to pick up a pair of wins on the women’s side, as she defeated Wesleyan’s Jenny Chu, 3-0, before earning a tough 10-9, 5-9, 10-9, 9-0 victory over Williams’ Kavitha Mannava. With the win over Mannava in the No. 6 match, Moulton prevented the Ephs from picking up a clean sweep.

Against Wesleyan, Amherst’s Mimi Bell (Shaker Heights, OH) and Megan Clower (Bryn Mawr, PA) earned impressive victories in the No. 7 and No. 8 matchups, respectively. Bell dropped the first game to the Cardinals’ Caroline Fox before taking the next three games in convincing fashion, while Clower battled Katie Kalafus to a 10-8, 9-4, 9-10, 9-7 result.

Other than Moulton’s win over her Eph counterpart, sophomore Hayley Milbourn (Baltimore, MD) put in the best performance against ninth-ranked Williams. After dropping the first game, 10-8, Milbourn continued to give Jennifer Coxe a run for her money, but Coxe held on for the 10-8, 9-7, 9-6 win in the No. 2 match.

The Amherst women (13-10) return to action Friday, Feb. 13, when they kick off the Howe Cup at Harvard against an opponent to be determined. The Amherst men (6-10) return to action Friday, Feb. 20, when they open play at the CSA Team Championships at Princeton.
