Men's Squash Closes Season With 7-2 Win Over Conn. College

Amherst closed out its 2011-12 season with a 7-2 win over Conn. College in the Summers Cup consolation finals.

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The 18th-ranked Amherst men’s squash team wrapped up its season with a 7-2 victory over Connecticut College at the CSA National Team Championships.

Dropping into the consolation bracket after a 7-2 opening round loss to Colby, Amherst (13-8) defeated fellow NESCAC rivals Wesleyan (6-3) and Conn. College (7-2) en route to its second Summers Cup (C Division) consolation championship in as many years.

Caleb Garza ’13 headlined the top of the Camel lineup with a 3-0 sweep over Scott DeSantis ’15 (Sudbury, Mass.), while Steve Severson ’12 (Mercer Island, Wash.) took three straight from Christopher King ’13 in the second position by scores of 11-7, 11-3, 11-4.

Dave Kerr ’14 (Short Hills, N.J.) outlasted John Sluder ’14 in a back-and-forth affair in the third spot, 3-2 (6-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-3, 11-8), while Charles Loesch-Quintin ’13 (Philadelphia, Pa.) handed Jeremy Wong ’12 a 3-0 loss.

Knotted at 1-1 in the fifth position, Todd Lavine ’12 (Atherton, Calif.) bested sophomore Hunter Bolling 11-9 and 12-10 in the final two games to seal another Amherst victory, while Max Kardon ’15 (Weston, Mass.) scored a decisive 3-0 (11-4, 11-7, 11-6) win over Brian Mullen ’15.

Rodrigo Miranda ’14 (San Salvador, El Salvador) rallied from a 2-1 hole to defeat first-year Michael Coscarelli, 3-2 (11-9, 2-11, 7-11, 11-9, 11-8), while Alex Southmayd ’15 (Boston, Mass.) secured a 3-0 triumph over Justin Curtis ’14.

Asa Welty ’13 recorded Conn. College’s only other point of the day, besting Matt Arnold ’12 (Larchmont, N.Y.), 3-2 (11-3, 8-11, 11-2, 8-11, 11-9), at the bottom of the order.
