AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College men’s squash team split a pair of matches Friday to open its busy weekend as hosts of the Pioneer Valley Invitational. The Lord Jeffs opened the day with a bang, shutting out Haverford, 9-0, but things got tougher in the nightcap as Amherst found itself on the other end of a 9-0 decision with Western Ontario.

Amherst’s opening match saw little drama as the Jeffs snapped a three-game skid with a 9-0 blanking of the Fords. Haverford gave Amherst its biggest scare in a thrilling No. 5 contest which saw Jake Albert ’15 come back from losing the first and third games, taking a marathon fourth stanza before finishing off Nate Shade ’16 in a tight fifth for the 3-2 (9-11, 11-2, 8-11, 18-16, 11-9) win.

In the next spot up, Steve Cacouris ’16 held off Charlie Michele ’13 in four close games (11-8, 11-8, 9-11, 11-8), while Rodrigo Miranda ’15 was the only other Jeff to need more than three games to win as he split the middle games of a 3-1 (11-7, 13-11, 6-11, 11-3) win over Larenson Ward ’16. Playing atop the Amherst lineup for the first time this season, David Kerr ’15 won a pair of tight games before finishing off Haverford’s Andy McComas ’13 easily for the 3-0 (11-9, 11-9, 11-3) win.

In the nightcap, only two Jeffs would avoid blanking as the 13th-ranked Mustangs cruised to an easy win to start their weekend south of the border. In the fourth position, Alex Southmayd ’15 started strong for Amherst with a first-game win, but Yeshale Chetty came back to comfortably take next three for the 3-1 win (7-11, 11-6, 11-5, 11-3). In the next slot down, Max Kardon battled Tashlin Reddy in the opening set and took the third, but eventually fell 3-1 (12-10, 11-6, 6-11, 11-2).

Amherst continues Invitational play on Saturday, Jan. 19 against Hamilton and Harvard.
