Jeffs Advance Past Camels in Consolation, 5-4

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The 20th-ranked Amherst College men’s squash team took the top four lineup spots en route to a tight 5-4 win over No. 24 Connecticut College in CSA Summers Cup consolation play Saturday on the Wesleyan Courts. The Lord Jeffs will wrap up national championship play in the consolation finals Sunday against No. 19 Drexel at 9 a.m.

Continuing his strong play at the top of the Amherst lineup, Noah Browne ’16 notched a 3-1 win over the Camels’ Caleb Garza ’13, rebounding after an 11-8 first-game setback to take the second, 11-5, before a marathon 14-12 fourth-game triumph and an 11-7 clincher in the fifth. Charles Loesch-Quintin ’13 was strong in the No. 2 slot, taking a thrilling opener from Brian Mullen ’15, 14-12, before posting 11-7 and 12-10 wins for the sweep.

Scott DeSantis ’15 posted the quickest win of the day for Amherst at No. 3, taking down John Sulder ’14 11-2 and 11-8 before a tight 12-10 third-game win. In similar fashion to Browne, Dave Kerr ’14 recovered from a first-game loss, having no trouble with Ben Thaler ’14 afterward as he won 3-1 thanks to 11-4, 11-6 and 11-7 triumphs.

Amherst’s decisive fifth win came at No. 6, where Max Kardon ’15 took care of Randy Coplin ’15, 3-1 (11-4, 11-8, 3-11, 11-6). Alex Southmayd ’15 lost a tough five-gamer to Hunter Bolling ’14 at No. 5, rebounding from an 11-8 first-game setback to win 11-4 before a dramatic 15-13 triumph in the third. Bolling took over the rest of the way, however, posting 11-3 and 11-6 wins for the comeback 3-2 victory.

The bottom of the Amherst lineup managed to win just one game, as Jake Albert ’15 took the thrilling opener of the No. 8 match from Mike Coscarelli ’15, 14-12, but couldn’t keep pace the rest of the way, falling 11-5, 12-10 and 11-9 for the 3-1 setback. Stephen Cacouris ’16 was swept by Justin Curtis ’14 at No. 7 (11-9, 11-6, 11-8) and Rodrigo Quan Miranda ’14 couldn’t hang with Asa Welty ’13 in the No. 9 match, falling 3-0 (11-3, 11-1, 11-8).
