Jeffs Fall Short Against Bowdoin, 5-4

BOSTON, Mass. - The 22nd-ranked Amherst men’s squash team closed out its run at the 2014 College Squash Association (CSA) Team Championships with a 5-4 loss to No. 21 Bowdoin in the Summers Cup (C Division) consolation finals.

Falling to the Polar Bears by a score of 5-4 for the second time in as many weeks, the Jeffs dropped to 7-12 on the season, while Bowdoin evened its record at 11-11. Amherst will close out its 2013-14 campaign at the CSA Individual Championships hosted by the University of Pennsylvania on Feb. 28-Mar. 2.

Notching a win at the top of the lineup, Stephan Danyluk ’14 upended Noah Browne ’16, 3-1 (11-9, 11-13, 11-8, 11-8). Tied at a set apiece against Matt Cooper ’16 in the second position, Scott DeSantis ’15 lost the third frame, 11-8. The junior stayed alive with an 11-4 decision in the fourth before completing the comeback with a 12-10 triumph in the tiebreak.

Falling in the first set of his third position match against Christian Dorff ’17, David Kerr ’14 took the next three frames by scores of 11-5, 11-6 and 11-3, respectively. Andrew Ward ’15 defeated Alex Southmayd ’15 at No. 4, 3-1 (12-14, 11-7, 12-10, 11-2), while Max Kardon ’15 needed just three sets to get past Reid Wilson ’14, 3-0 (11-6, 11-6, 11-5).

In a closely contested sixth position showdown, Max Bearse ’15 edged out Chris Groot ’16, 3-1 (13-11, 4-11, 11-7, 12-10), while William Winmill ’14 tripped up Darian Ehsani ’17, 3-1 (11-8, 7-11, 11-6, 11-4). Jeremy Van ’17 held off Ben Bristol ’l7 in the eighth position, 3-1 (11-7, 11-5, 4-11, 11-7), but Cyrus Nassikas ’17 shut out Rodrigo Miranda ’14 at the bottom of the order, 3-0 (11-4, 11-6, 11-7).
