Hayley Milbourn '11 upset Mount Holyoke's top player, 3-1.

AMHERST, MA – Missing three of its top nine players, the 16th-ranked Amherst College women’s squash team put in an exceptional performance during a 7-2 loss to 11th-ranked Mount Holyoke College. The Lord Jeffs fall to 3-2 on the season, while the Lyons improve to 5-2.

Highlighting Amherst’s day was junior Hayley Milbourn (Baltimore, MD), who needed only four games to upset Vidushi Gurunada in the No. 1 match. The Lyons’ top player managed to win the second game, 11-7, but Milbourn won the first, third and fourth by scores of 11-9, 11-6 and 11-8. In the CSA preseason rankings—which ranked 404 collegiate players—Gurunada was 51 spots ahead of Milbourn.

Earning Amherst’s other point was junior Mimi Bell (Shaker Heights, OH), who also needed only four games to pull off an upset. Ranked 62 spots below Mount Holyoke’s Paulina Rojek, Bell convincingly took the first game, 11-5, before battling for wins of 14-12 and 12-10 in the second and fourth games, respectively.

Five of Amherst’s seven losses went to at least four games. Notably, first-year Chandler Lusardi (New York, NY) alternated wins with Mount Holyoke’s Laura Robinson in the No. 2 match. Lusardi won the first and third games, but Robinson took the second and fourth before closing out the match with a 12-10 result in the decider.

First-year Mary Katherine McNeil (Greenwich, CT) and sophomore Megan Clower (Bryn Mawr, PA) won their first games at No. 7 and No. 9, respectively, but Mount Holyoke managed to storm back for a 3-1 victory in each match.

The Lord Jeffs will return to action Saturday, Jan. 16, when they host third-ranked University of Pennsylvania at 5 p.m.
