Amherst Teams Each Fall to Pennsylvania, 9-0

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College men's and women's squash teams, each ranked 16th in the nation, had a tall order this afternoon when the 8th- and 3rd-ranked University of Pennsylvania teams came to town. Both the Lord Jeff men and women played hard, but eventually saw the Quaker sides emerge with 9-0 wins.

Only a pair of Amherst men were able to avoid losing in three games, as junior Kevin Cecala (Wilmington, DE) and sophomore Tom Rapisarda (New York, NY) each fell in hard-fought four-game matches in the middle of the lineup. At number four, Cecala was defeated by Penn's James Clark after winning the opening game, 12-10.

In the number five match, Rapisarda suffered an 11-6 loss in the first game but battled back for an 11-8 win in the second frame, only to lose back-to-back games to end the match. Senior co-captain Lee Banta (Westfield, NJ) also played well for the Lord Jeff men, forcing Penn's Zuhaib Mohiuddin to a 13-11 result in the first game.

On the women's side, Amherst was unable to pull out a single game against the Quakers, with Pennsylvania winning all nine bouts three games to none. Amherst junior Hayley Milbourn (Baltimore, MD) played in the top spot once again, but fell to Nabilla Ariffin 11-5, 11-3 and 11-5.  First-year Anne Piper (Bronxville, NY) played one of the best matches of the day but fell to Britt Hebden 11-8, 11-5 and 11-4. Junior Mimi Bell (Shaker Heights, OH) was solid in the number seven match, and refused to give up in her third and final game with a 12-10 loss.

For the women's team, today was the third straight loss after a three-game win streak to start the season, while the men's side sits at 3-2 on the year. Amherst will have just 24 hours to regroup, as the Lord Jeff men and women each welcome Dartmouth University tomorrow evening at 6 p.m. for another home match.
