Jeffs Split with Diplomats in Day One of Invitational

AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College squash teams opened the 2010 Smith/Mount Holyoke Invitational by splitting a pair of matches with Franklin & Marshall College. The Lord Jeff women earned a 7-2 win over the Diplomats, while the Amherst men were dealt a loss by the same score.

The three-day invitational, which features 53 matches among 11 men’s teams and 15 women’s teams at Amherst, Smith and Mount Holyoke colleges, will resume Saturday at 9 a.m. The Amherst men will host Colby at 10:30 a.m. and Hobart at 3 p.m., with the Lord Jeff women hosting Colby at 10:30 a.m. and William Smith at 1:30 p.m.

The 18th-ranked Amherst men (3-5) picked up wins in the No. 7 and No. 8 matches, but five Diplomats won by a score of 3-0 to hand the Lord Jeffs their fifth consecutive loss of the season.

Sophomore Todd Lavine (Atherton, CA) and senior Lee Banta (Westfield, NJ) won in the seventh and eighth matches by scores of 3-1 and 3-0, respectively, to give Amherst its two points. First-year Charles Loesch-Quintin (Philadelphia, PA) jumped out to an early lead with a 13-11 win in the first game of the No. 2 match, but he dropped the next three for the 3-1 loss.

The 15th-ranked Amherst women snapped a five-match losing streak with a convincing win over the 18th-ranked Diplomats, with Franklin and Marshall winning at No. 1 (3-1) and No. 8 (3-0). Earning 3-0 wins for the Jeffs were first-year Chandler Lusardi (New York, NY) at No. 2, sophomore Anna Scheidt (Fort Lee, NJ) at No. 5, first-year Anne Piper (Bronxville, NY) at No. 6 and junior Caitlin Demkin (Warren, NJ) at No. 7.

Junior co-captain Allie Dalglish (Fort Washington, PA), sophomore Kate Savage (Philadelphia, PA) and first-year Mary Katherine McNeill (Greenwich, CT) each earned a 3-1 victory for Amherst. At No. 3, Dalglish dropped the first game but cruised to wins of 11-1, 11-2 and 11-6 in the next three. Savage also won in come-from-behind fashion by taking the final three games of a marathon No. 4 match. After Chelsea Ross edged out an 11-9 win in the first game, Savage squeaked out wins of 16-14, 11-8 and 13-11.
