Amherst Teams Split to Finish NESCAC Tournament

HARTFORD, CT - The Amherst College men's and women's squash teams split a pair of matches to close out the final day of the 2010 NESCAC Championships on the campus of Trinity College. The men's team fell to Middlebury 7-2 this morning, while the women's squad topped Hamilton 6-3.

The story of the weekend for the men's side was the play of junior Brian Warner (Atlanta, GA) who would likely have posted an undefeated record at the top spot for Amherst had he not been taken out of his Bates match by an injury. During his bout against the Bobcats, Warner was struck in the face by a racquet and required stitches over his left eye. Coming onto the court to stitch up Warner so he continue playing was his mother, a doctor, who was in attendance. Warner returned to the court and picked up wins later yesterday over Tufts, and again today against Middlebury.

For the Amherst women, junior Hayley Milbourn (Baltimore, MD) posted a perfect 3-0 record over the weekend despite taking on the opposition's best player each match. Rookie Anne Piper (Bronxville, NY) had another solid weekend, and has been unstoppable for Amherst of late. Notably, junior Caitlin Demkin (Warren, NJ) and sophomore Anna Scheidt (Fort Lee, NY) closed out Amherst's win over Hamilton with clutch performances late in close matches to clinch the team win.

With play at the conference tournament wrapping up this afternoon, the Amherst men placed sixth overall, while the women's side finished in fifth place. Both Amherst teams will return to action in the coming weeks at the CSA Team National Championships.
