Amherst Squash Teams Top Northeastern to Open Season

BOSTON, MA – The Amherst College men’s and women’s squash teams opened up the 2009-10 season on Wednesday evening with a pair of road wins over Northeastern University. The Amherst men topped the Huskies 6-3, while the Lord Jeff women picked up a 7-2 win.

In the men’s match, the night could be broken down into three distinct sets of matches. In the top three matches, the Huskies overpowered Amherst, winning all three bouts. In matches 4-6, Amherst won a trio of closely played matches, before the Lord Jeffs swept a trio of 3-0 results in the 7-9 spots.

On court number seven, Amherst dominated Northeastern in three straight matches. Senior Saahil Sud (Brampton, NJ) topped Andrew Wilson 11-2, 11-0, 11-1 to start the evening. Classmate and co-captain Nike Kramer (Brooklyn, NY) followed with an 11-3, 11-5, 12-10 win over Jose Garcia-Planas, before sophomore Zach Porges (Philadelphia, PA) ousted Keith Sprout 11-3, 11-6, 11-4. The performance by the bottom third of Amherst’s ladder made the difference, as the top two-thirds split their six matches without a single 3-0 victory for either team.

On the women’s side, Amherst first-year Chandler Lusardi (New York, NY) dropped her collegiate debut for Amherst, losing 3-0 in the top match. Classmate Ginny Wheeler (Bryn Mawr, PA) was edged in a five-set match in the number six match, while Amherst swept the remaining seven bouts. First-years Anna Piper (Bronxville, NY) and Sarah Nyirjesy (Rydal, PA) each won their first matches in the purple and white as well.

Senior captain Hannah Merves (Merion, PA) played exceptionally in the number eight spot, winning her matchup 3-0. Merves was the most dominating of the seven Amherst winners at Northeastern, winning 11-4, 11-2, and 11-1 to set the tone for the match. The young Amherst squad followed in the footsteps of Merves, Amherst’s lone senior, and cruised to a win to start the season 1-0.
