Amherst Squash Teams Compete at Yale Invitational

First-year Alexandra Dalglish topped Middlebury's top player 3-0 in the Amherst win.

NEW HAVEN, CT – The Amherst College men’s and women’s squash teams returned to action this weekend at the annual Yale Invitational tournament. While both teams fell to Yale by 9-0 scores, the Lord Jeff women defeated NESCAC foe Middlebury College in a tough 6-3 match. The Amherst men also fell to Franklin and Marshall by a 6-3 margin, before rebounding to top Middlebury 5-4.

The 17th-ranked women’s team failed to take a single game from the host Bulldogs in the first match of the weekend, but responded nicely against the Panthers of Middlebury College. The conference rival was looking up at Amherst in the standings at the start of the day, with plenty of motivation to jump in the standings with a win.

With the two teams tied at three wins apiece, senior co-captain Libby Martin (St. Louis, MO) was the catalyst for Amherst once again. She rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win the fourth and fifth games of her match against Virginia Shannon in the two-spot. Riding the senior leader’s win, Amherst needed just a single win to clinch the match. The Lord Jeffs closed out the day winning both matches remaining to take a 6-3 win.

On the men’s side, the Bulldogs once again handed Amherst a crushing defeat to kick things off. Yale took all 27 games played en route to a 9-0 team win. The Jeffs then fell 6-3 in a tough match to Franklin & Marshall to close out their day one action.

Amherst returned to the courts in day two of the tournament to face Middlebury College in a non-conference action. Amherst was powered to an impressive win by a strong performance from the middle of its line-up. After dropping the top match to the Panthers, Amherst swept the 2 thru 6 matches to seal the win. Amherst also held 1-0 scores in each of the 7, 8, and 9 match-ups, before falling in each match 3-1.

Individual match results for the Franklin and Marshall match are not currently available.
