Amherst Kicks Off Season with Pair of Wins at Northeastern

BOSTON, MA – The Amherst College men’s and women’s squash teams kicked off their respective 2007-08 seasons with 8-1 wins at Northeastern University Wednesday night. The Lord Jeffs return to action Tuesday, Dec. 4 when they will host national powerhouse Trinity College.

Making their debut appearances in a collegiate match for the Amherst women were first-years Alexandra Dalglish (Fort Washington, PA), Hayley Milbourn (Baltimore, MD) and Caitlin Demkin (Warren, NJ). Dalglish was involved in a close match in the top spot, as she edged out Northeastern’s Tessa Martin by scores of 10-9 and 10-8 in the first and third games, respectively, with a lopsided 9-1 victory sandwiched in between.

Milbourn was also involved in a back-and-forth battle as the Jeffs’ second player. After dropping the first game, 9-7, Milbourn rattled off consecutive wins to put Sara Barret’s back against the wall. Barret was able to force a fifth game, but Milbourn cruised to victory by taking the deciding game, 9-1. Rounding out the first-years making their debuts was Demkin, who breezed past Sarah Sweet in the fifth spot, 9-3, 9-2, 9-4.

On the men’s side, first-years Tom Rapisarda (New York, NY) and Kevin Cecala (Wilmington, DE) made their collegiate debuts and each picked up 3-1 victories. While Rapisarda won the first, third and fourth games in his match as the Jeffs’ No. 3 player, Cecala came back after dropping his first game to win three straight, including a 10-9 nail-biter in the third game.

Junior Drew Blacker (Summit, NJ) and sophomore Lee Banta (Westfield, NJ) also won their matches in come-from-behind fashion. Blacker dropped his first game in the top spot before storming back for a 3-1 victory, while Banta earned a hard-fought 3-2 win after falling in his first game.
