Amherst Women Post 3-0 Record on Day Three of Invitational

AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College women’s squash team posted a 3-0 record on the third and final day of the Pioneer Valley Invitational, earning 9-0 victories over Connecticut College and Wellesley College before closing out the weekend with an 8-1 win against Colby College.

The 14th-ranked Lord Jeffs went 5-1 during a busy weekend to improve to 8-3 on the season. They will return to action Wednesday, Jan. 19, when they host 10th-ranked Brown University at 1 p.m.

Amherst’s Kate Savage ’12 (Philadelphia, PA), Evelyn Kramer ’14 (Brooklyn, NY) and Lena Rice ’14 (Philadelphia, PA) each went 3-0 on Sunday to lead the Lord Jeffs, with Kramer and Rice going 5-1 on the weekend.

The Lord Jeffs kicked off day three with a convincing win over 24th-ranked Connecticut College, as each of the nine Amherst players earned a 9-0 victory. Amherst’s win over 27th-ranked Wellesley featured another eight 3-0 wins, with Hayley Milbourn ’11 (Baltimore, MD) taking a 3-1 result in the top spot. Mary Katherine McNeill ’13 (Greenwich, CT) and Sarah McCarrick ’12 (New Canaan, CT) were particularly impressive against Wellesley at No. 5 and No. 9, respectively, with each player surrendering a total of only five points in three games.

The weekend concluded with an 8-1 win over the 20th-ranked Mules of Colby, with the Jeffs picking up another six 3-0 results. The No. 2 matchup saw Amherst’s Anne Piper ’13 (Bronxville, NY) win her first two games (11-7, 11-8), but Colby’s Molly Parsons came back to win the next two (11-2, 11-5). The deciding game went down to the wire, but it was Piper who edged out the 13-11 victory. In the No. 7 match, McNeill split her first two games before comfortably winning her final two, 11-3 and 11-1.
