AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College women’s squash team wrapped up its weekend as hosts of the Pioneer Valley Invitational in strong form on Sunday, defeating a higher-ranked opponent for the second consecutive day as the 19th-ranked Jeffs took down No. 17 Wesleyan, 7-2.

Chandler Lusardi ’13 led the way at the top of the Amherst lineup as she pulled away from Mary Foster ’14 for a 3-1 win after a nail-biter first game and a second-game loss (12-10, 6-11, 11-4, 11-6). Anne Piper ’13 had an easier time in the No. 2 match, sweeping Annie Maxwell ’15 (11-8, 11-7, 11-7).

In Amherst’s most dramatic win of the day, Arielle Lehmann ’15 dropped the first two games to Lauren Nelson ’15 but rallied to take the third then triumphed in a pair of marathon games to close out a thrilling 3-2 (5-11, 7-11, 11-6, 16-14, 18-16) win.

In the middle of the Jeff lineup, Ericka Robertson ’16 and Evelyn Kramer ’14 met little resistance in the fourth and fifth slots, sweeping Grace Zimmerman ’13 (11-6, 11-2, 11-7) and Nell Schwed ’14 (11-7, 11-4, 11-7), respectively. Corri Johnson ’16 played a tighter match at No. 6, dropping the second to Danielle Craig ’13 but notching a 3-1 (11-7, 11-13, 11-9, 11-9) win after taking the exciting third and fourth games.

The sevens match proved nearly as dramatic as Lehman’s win at No. 4, but this time it was the Cardinals coming out on top as Claire Miller ’15 rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Khushy Aggarwal ’16 (9-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-8, 11-8).

In the eighth spot, Taryn Clary ’16 rebounded after suffering her first collegiate loss against Harvard on Saturday, easily sweeping Kar-Anne Tan ’14 (11-1, 11-5, 11-6). Amherst’s other loss of the match came at No. 9 as Liza Bayless ’16 pulled away from Mary Katherine McNeill ’13 for a 3-1 (11-6, 4-11, 11-5, 11-5) win.

After a busy weekend which saw the Jeffs go 4-1, Amherst will be right back in action on Tuesday, hosting Brown University in a 2 p.m. match.
