Jeffs Win Walker Cup Over Franklin & Marshall

poronerYALE.jpgPRINCETON, N.J. – Led by the middle of its lineup, the 17th-ranked Amherst women’s squash team defeated No. 18 Franklin and Marshall, 6-3, to claim the Walker Cup (C Division) at the 2014 CSA Team Championships, hosted by Princeton University.

Entering the tournament with a 5-0 regular season record against the Walker Cup field, Amherst defeated No. 24 Colby (8-1) and No. 20 Bowdoin (5-4) to earn a trip to the finals.

The Jeffs also earned a 6-3 win over the Diplomats earlier in the season at the Pioneer Valley Invitational and finish the season 11-9 overall after Sunday’s victory. Last year, Amherst knocked off Franklin and Marshall in the Kurtz Cup (B Division) final as well.

Towards the top of the Amherst lineup, Arielle Lehman ’15 claimed a clean sweep from the No. 2 position. Following consecutive 11-7 wins, the junior edged Dulakshi Elikewela ’17, 12-10, in the final set.

The Jeffs swept their competition from the No. 4 spot down to the No. 7 position. Tiana Palmer-Poroner ’17 earned her third win of the championships with scores of 13-11, 12-10 and 11-5 on the No. 4 court. One spot lower in the lineup, Evelyn Kramer ’14 pulled out a 14-12 win in the first set before rattling off back-to-back wins of 11-9.

Khushy Aggarwal ’16 and Taryn Clary ’16 continued their strong performances from the sixth and seventh positions, respectively. Aggarwal won all three sets by scores of 11-8 and Clary earned a decisive 11-3 win in the first match followed by wins of 11-7 and 11-5. Both teammates went 3-0 during the CSA Team Championships.

In the No. 9 spot, Lena Rice ’14 pulled in another win for the Jeffs as the senior also went undefeated during the three-day tournament. After falling in the first set, 12-10, Rice retaliated with wins of 11-6, 11-6 and 11-5 to pull off the win.
