Lichtenfels Named NESCAC Performer of the Week
AMHERST, MA – Amherst College sophomore Ryan Lichtenfels (McLean, VA) has been named the NESCAC Men’s Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week for winning two individual events and taking part in a relay victory this past weekend against archrival Williams College.
Amherst’s current record holder in the 1,000- and 1,650-yard freestyles, Lichtenfels came to Amherst as a backstroker but has found his place in the distance freestyle events. Lichtenfels first earned NESCAC Performer of the Week honors last year when he set Pratt Pool records in the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle events during a dual meet with MIT. His record in the 1,000 would last for less than a year, as his 9:33.10 against the Ephs this past Saturday was 1.50 seconds faster than his previous mark.
Although his time in the 500 just missed breaking his own pool record, Lichtenfels picked up a second victory by edging the Ephs with an NCAA ‘B’ time of 4:38.69. The third win of the day for Lichtenfels came in the 400-yard freestyle relay, as he joined senior co-captain Tad Homchick, first-year Sheng Hu and junior Alex Fraser to set a new pool record of 3:08.34.
On the women’s side, Logan Todhunter ’12 of Williams was named Performer of the Week for a dominant showing against the Lord Jeffs. Todhunter came away with two individual victories and helped two relay teams to first place finishes. Her times of 55.58 in the 100-yard butterfly and 2:01.63 in the 200-yard butterfly—both of which are new Pratt Pool records—are currently tops in the nation. She also swam the butterfly leg of the 200-yard medley relay and anchored the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Currently on their training trip in Florida, Lichtenfels and the Lord Jeffs will return to action Saturday, Jan. 23, when they head to Hamilton College for a meet with the Continentals and Saint Lawrence University.
