Jeffs Propelled by 800 Freestyle Relays on Day Three of Championships

Haring2
Anna Haring '10 placed 16th in Friday's 200-yard butterfly and was part of the 800-yard freestyle relay.

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – The Amherst College men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams each used a solid performance in the 800-yard freestyle relay to remain in the running for a top-10 finish at the 2010 NCAA Division III Championships. The Lord Jeffs will close out their season Saturday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

The Amherst men moved up one spot to sixth place, with their 151 points close behind Kalamazoo (183, 4th) and The College of New Jersey (181, 5th). Kenyon College is well on its way to another national title with 502 points, followed by Emory (222.5) and Denison (212). The Lord Jeffs lead all NESCAC schools, with Middlebury (131, 8th) and Williams (105, 9th) fighting to stay in the top-10.

The Amherst women held on to sixth place by earning 31 points, bringing their total to 114. Emory (371.5) and Denison (346) are out in front of the pack, with Williams (297), Kenyon (224) and Claremont (144) rounding out the top five.

Junior Reid Fitzgerald (New York, NY) gave Amherst two points by placing 15th in the 100-yard backstroke (51.05), but it was the 800-yard freestyle relay team of Ryan Lichtenfels ’12 (McLean, VA), Tim White ’12 (Centerport, NY), Ryan Colby ’11 (Birdsboro, PA) and Alex Fraser ’11 (Willowbrook, IL) that provided the big boost. The Lord Jeffs’ time of 6:40.37 in the final men’s event was good enough for second place and 34 points.

Swimming in her final NCAA Championship, Anna Haring ’10 (Santa Barbara, CA) earned a point for Amherst by placing 16th in the 200-yard butterfly, as her time of 2:05.85 rounded out the event’s scorers. The Lord Jeff senior then swam the second leg of the 800 free relay, joining Rebecca Thompson ’12 (Evanston, IL), Emily Swett ’13 (Rochester, NY) and Kendra Stern ’11 (Albuquerque, NM). Amherst placed fourth in the relay with a time of 7:29.73.
