Amherst Men Place Third at 2008 NESCAC Championships
MIDDLEBURY, VT – The 2008 NESCAC Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships kicked off this past Friday and concluded Sunday evening at Middlebury College. Amherst College placed third with 1,399 points, finishing behind Tufts University (1,489) and seven-time champion Williams College (1,860). Amherst’s Junior Kai Robinson (Vashon, WA) was named Diver of the Year, while senior Connor Boyd (Northridge, CA) earned Four-Year High Point Diver honors.
Robinson came out on top in both the 1- and 3-meter Diving events, setting a pool and NESCAC meet record with his 558.65 points in Sunday’s 3-meter dive. Also setting a new pool record on Sunday was Amherst’s 400-yard Freestyle Relay team comprised of first-year Alex Fraser (Willowbrook, IL), sophomore Tad Homchick (Mercer Island, WA), junior Christian Witzke (Jacksonville, FL) and senior Derek Prill (Paris, France), who completed the event in 3:04.27.
Homchick, Fraser and Witzke also teamed up with senior Andrew Maslan (Mission Hills, KS) to win the 200-yard Freestyle Relay in a NESCAC meet record time of 1:23.15.
Earning the most points among divers in NESCAC Championship meets over his four years was Boyd, who placed second in this year’s 1-meter event behind Robinson with a score of 413.50 and third in the 3-meter event with a score of 440.80.
The 2008 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships kick off Thursday, Mar. 20 and conclude Saturday, Mar. 22. The national championships are hosted by The College of Wooster at Miami University's Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center in Oxford, Ohio.
