Amherst Swim Teams Start Season 2-0 on Both Sides

The Amherst College men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams started their seasons off with strong wins against NESCAC foe Colby College. The women took thirteen of their sixteen events on their way to a 143-119 win while the men swept all sixteen to clinch their 141-102 win.

On the women’s side, first-year Meggie Meisinger (St. Louis, MO) joined junior Meaghan Stern (Albuquerque, NM) and senior captain Brittany Sasser (Belmont, MA) as two-event winners in this opening meet. Meisinger took first in both the one and three meter boards in her first collegiate competition. Stern touched first in the 100 and 200 freestyle events while Sasser did the same in both the 100 and 200 backstrokes. Among the other event winners was junior Ellie Hewitt (Stratford, CT), who delivered a strong performance in the grueling 1650 freestyle to start the individual events off on the right note.

In the men’s events, first-year Ryan Colby (Birdsboro, PA) led the way with wins in the 1650 and 500 yard freestyles. With his time of 16:45.89 in the 1650, Colby shattered the previous pool record and started the men’s season off on the right foot. Four others joined him with wins in two events. Fellow first-year Reid Fitzgerald (Manhattan, NY) started his career at Amherst off with wins in the 100 and 200 backstokes, junior Christian Witzke (Jacksonville, Fl) touched first in the 100 and 200 freestyles, senior captain Andrew Maslan (Mission Hills, KS) captured first in the 200 breaststroke and 200 IM, and senior Connor Boyd (Northridge, CA) won both the one and three meter diving events.

The teams returned to action Monday, November 19th with wins against NESCAC and Little Three archrival Wesleyan University. The women came out on top by a score of 143-95, while the men were victorious by a count of 137-104.

A trio including two first-year performers paced the women to take first in nine of the thirteen events and the win on the day. Meggie Meisinger (St. Louis, MO) was victorious in both the one and three meter diving events for the second meet in a row, while fellow first-year Kendra Stern (Albuquerque, NM) got in on the action with wins in the 100 and 200 freestyle events. Senior captain Brittany Sasser (Belmont, MA) continued her dominance with wins in the 200 IM and 100 backstroke. Sasser also teamed up with junior Erin Morrison (Old Greenwich, CT), senior Lisa Pritchard (Saratoga Springs, NY), and junior Meaghan Stern (Albuquerque, NM) to take home first with a strong performance in the 400 freestyle relay to close the meet.

In the men’s meet, strong performances were required from the entire roster to defeat a strong Wesleyan squad. First-year Ryan Colby (Birdsboro, PA) dominated the distance events with wins in the 1000 and 500 freestyles again for two of the men’s eight wins on the day. Junior Christian Witzke (Jacksonville, FL) took home first in the 100 and 200 freestyle events. Witzke also joined first-year Alex Fraser (Willowbrook, IL), senior captain Andrew Maslan (Mission Hills, KS) and sophomore Tad Homchick (Mercer Island, WA) for a thrilling win in the final event of the night, the 400 freestyle relay. Senior Connor Boyd also continued his strong early season performance with wins in the one and three meter diving competitions.

The men’s and women’s teams both improved to 2-0 on the season overall and 1-0 in the Little Three with these wins. Both teams return to action at home against Middlebury College Saturday, December 1 at 1:00 p.m.
