Lord Jeff Teams Each Defeat Middlebury on Road
The Amherst College men's and women's swimming and diving teams each picked up a commanding win at Middlebury College on Saturday, December 6th. The Lord Jeff women defeated the Panthers 170-126, while the men's team grabbed a 176.5-110.5 victory.
The women's team earned nine wins in 16 events, while also capitalizing on superior depth to defeat the Middlebury Panthers. Senior Meaghan Stern (Albuquerque, NM) and sophomore Kendra Stern (Albuquerque, NM) led the charge, each winning two individual events before combining forces with sophomore Brooke Bennett (Arcadia, CA), who also captured first place in the 200 butterfly event, and senior captain Erin Morrison (Old Greenwich, CT) to take home first place in the 400 freestyle relay.
Meaghan earned an NCAA provisional qualification time in her first win, the 200 freestyle, before taking home yet another big victory in the 100 freestyle. Meanwhile Kendra earned provisional qualification times for NCAAs in winning the 50 and 500 freestyle events. Other event winners included senior captain Kara MacLaverty (Kenilworth, IL), in the 1000 freestyle, senior Alex Lee (Piedmont, CA), in the 200 backstroke, and junior Kendall Dacey (West Roxbury, MA) in the 100 butterfly.
In the men's meet, the Lord Jeffs won 12 of the 16 events, in addition to a tie for first in the opening event of the meet. Senior captain Christian Witzke (Jacksonville, FL), junior Tad Homchick (Mercer Island, WA) and sophomore Alex Fraser (Willowbrook, IL) played crucial roles in the win, combining to sweep the freestyle events.
Witzke touched first in the 1000 freestyle, 100 freestyle, and 100 butterfly, while Homchick won the 50 freestyle, and Fraser won the 200 and 500 freestyles. The three were joined by senior captain Joe Scala (Pequannock, NJ) to take home first place in the 400 freestyle relay. Senior Kai Robinson (Vashon, WA) continued his usual dominance, earning first place finishes in both the 1 and 3 meter diving competitions and breaking a ten year old pool record in the 3 meter competition with a score of 332.85.
Sophomore Ryan Colby (Birdsboro, PA) and first-years Bart Federak (Towaco, NJ) and Mike O'Connor (Cold Spring Harbor, NY) rounded out the event winners for the Jeffs. Colby captured the 200 butterfly crown, while Federak and O'Connor took home the 200 and 100 breaststroke events, respectively.
With these wins, both the men's and women's teams moved to 3-0 for the season. Both teams return to action against Hamilton College on Saturday, January 3rd at 2:00 PM at Pratt Pool.
