Lichtenfels Tabbed NESCAC Performer of the Week
AMHERST, MA – Amherst College junior Ryan Lichtenfels (McLean, VA) has been named NESCAC Men’s Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week for winning three individual events during an upset victory against MIT this past Saturday.
MIT entered Saturday’s dual meet ranked fifth in Division III with a 7-0 record, but the Engineers were dealt a 167-131 loss despite setting four pool records. Lichtenfels led the Amherst charge by setting two Pratt Pool records of his own, helping the Lord Jeffs defeat MIT for the first time since 2007 to keep their hopes alive for the program’s first perfect season in seven years.
After setting a new pool mark in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:41.04, Lichtenfels rewrote the pool record he already owned in the 500-yard freestyle by finishing the race in 4:35.54. He wrapped up his day with a win in the 200-yard individual medley, posting a time of 1:55.32. This is the third NESCAC Performer of the Week award for Lichtenfels, who was also honored on Feb. 2, 2009 and on Jan. 11, 2010.
Lichtenfels will return to action Saturday, Feb. 5, when the Jeffs close out their dual meet season at Springfield College. The NESCAC Men’s Championship is set to begin Friday, Feb. 25 at Bowdoin, as Lichtenfels will attempt to defend his conference titles in the 400 IM and the 1,650-yard freestyle.
