Jeffs Win Two More Events, Finish Second at NESCAC Championship

Lichtenfels
Ryan Lichtenfels '12 won the 1,650-yard freestyle for the third time in as many years.

BRUNSWICK, ME – Amherst College won two events on Sunday to wrap up the 2011 NESCAC Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship in second place. The Lord Jeffs won eight of the weekend’s 24 races to finish with 1,614.5 points, the most in program history.

Williams totaled 1,741.5 points to win the team title for the ninth consecutive year and 10th time in all, while Tufts had 1,318 points to finish behind Amherst. The Ephs’ 127-point margin of victory was their smallest since the 2003 championship, which they won by 73.5 points. The Lord Jeffs took the runner-up spot for the first time since 2007, having finished third in each of the past three years.

Alex Fraser ’11 (Willowbrook, IL) wrapped up an outstanding weekend by winning the 100-yard freestyle for the second time in his career, edging Williams College’s Ben Wampler with an NCAA ‘B’ time of 45.07 seconds. Fraser, who also won the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events and was part of three winning relay teams, earned Four-Year High Point Swimmer honors. Fraser's win in the 100 helped the Jeffs pull to within four points of the Ephs with four events to go, but Williams pulled away down the stretch.

Ryan Lichtenfels ’12 (McLean, VA) won the 1,650-yard freestyle for the third time in as many years, with his time of 15:31.84 setting a new Leroy Greason Pool record and coming in well under the NCAA ‘A’ cut. Tim White ’12 (Centerport, NY) also put in an NCAA automatic qualifying performance, placing second with a time of 15:43.01, while Conor McAuliffe ’14 (Andover, MA) finished fourth (15:52.14, NCAA ‘B’) in what was Amherst’s most dominant event of the night.

Amherst nearly got a third win in the 3-meter dive, where Colin White ’14 (Evanston, IL) earned 452.25 points to conclude his first championship meet in style. White was edged by Tufts University first-year Johann Schmidt on Friday in the 1-meter dive, and Schmidt once again squeaked out a win on Sunday.

The 200-yard backstroke featured three Lord Jeffs in the top five, as Daniel Schwab ’13 (San Diego, CA), Reid Fitzgerald ’11 (New York, NY) and Peter Landefeld ’14 (Tiburon, CA) placed second (1:50.40, NCAA ‘B’), third (1:51.80, NCAA ‘B’) and fifth (1:55.88), respectively.

The 200-yard breaststroke was also an impressive event for Amherst, as Bart Federak ’12 (Towaco, NJ) placed third (2:07.33) and was followed by Mike O’Connor ’12 (Cold Spring Harbor, NY) in fifth (2:07.92) and Connor Beaulieu ’14 (Windsor, CT) in sixth (2:08.74). Rounding out Amherst’s top individual performers was Tyler Bulakul ’14 (Bangkok, Thailand), who placed fourth in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:54.52.

Amherst’s weekend concluded with Lichtenfels, Fitzgerald, Fraser and Ben McBratney ’12 (Evanston, IL) completing the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:05.74, which was good enough for fifth.

Select members of the Amherst men’s and women’s teams will participate in the NCAA Division III Championships, which will begin Mar. 23 in Knoxville, Tenn. More information will be posted to the Amherst Athletics website when it is available.
