Women's Swimming & Diving Finishes Second at NESCAC Championships

Amherst finished second at the NESCAC Championships for the seventh time in 11 years.

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - The Amherst College women’s swimming & diving team finished as the runner-up for the seventh time in 11 years, placing second at the 2012 NESCAC Championships hosted by Wesleyan University.

Williams took home top honors with 1826 points over the three day event, followed by Amherst (1460.5), Tufts (1261.5), Middlebury (1142.5) and Bates (867). Bowdoin finished sixth (732.5), with Conn. College (725.5), the host Cardinals (678.5) and Hamilton (636) coming in seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively. Colby placed 10th (452.5), with Trinity rounding out the field of 11 with a score of 422.5.5.

Hoping to get the evening off to a good start, Amherst enjoyed a strong showing in the 1650-yard freestyle, with four swimmers finishing in the top-10, including a pair in the top five.

Stephanie Ternullo ’15 (Tolland, Conn.) led the way, placing third with an NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 17:13.02, followed closely by teammate Becca Thompson ’12 (Evanston, Ill.), who also finished under the ‘B’ cut, touching in at 17:14.21.

Audrey Ingerson ’14 (Irvine, Calif.) and Anna Pietrantonio ’14 (Chevy Chase, Md.) also posted times good enough for the NCAA ‘B’ cut, touching in at 17:31.34 and 17:34.59, respectively to place eighth and 10th.

With the Jeffs in second following the night’s first event, Amherst placed three in the top-8 of the 200-yard backstroke, with Sabrina Lee ’15 (Palo Alto, Calif.), Aline Kim ’15 (Seoul, Korea) and Thompson coming in fourth, sixth and eighth, respectively. Lee’s time of 2:06.28 was nearly seven tenths of a second under the NCAA ‘B’ cut, while Kim and Thompson turned in times of 2:07.67 and 2:08.56.

Katie Vincett ’13 (Pittsburgh, Pa.) then led Amherst in the 100-free with a fourth-place finish (52.77), with teammates Ashleigh Stoddart ’15 (Winnetka, Ill.) (52.83) and Lulu Belak ’14 (New Canaan, Conn.) (53.35) coming in fifth and seventh.

Courtney Flynn ’15 (Somers, Conn.) and Abby Hahn ’14 (New York, N.Y.) kept things rolling for the Jeffs in the 200-yard breaststroke, posting NCAA ‘B’ cut times of 2:21.30 and 2:23.63 to finish second and third, respectively, before Nicole Heise ’13 (Ithaca, N.Y.) and Allison Merz ’14 (Los Angeles, Calif.) came in under the ‘B’ cut in the 200-yard butterfly with times of 2:07.00 and 2:07.44.

Lizzy Linsmayer ’14 (Denver, Colo.) finished second in the 3-meter dive with an NCAA ‘B’ score of 458.55, while Amherst’s 400-yard freestyle relay team of Vincett, Ricka Sadovnikoff ’15 (Waltham, Mass.), Lee and Ternullo wrapped up competition with a second place showing, with a ‘B’ cut time of 3:29.45.
