Records Fall as Jeffs Blow Past Hamilton, 193-96

AMHERST, Mass. - Rebounding from its first loss of the season, the Amherst men’s swimming and diving team pieced together a record-breaking day as part of a 193-96 victory over Hamilton College.

Enjoying a big afternoon on the boards, Colin White ’14 set a new Pratt Pool record in the 3-meter dive with a score of 360.38, while meeting the NCAA ‘B’ cut standard in the 1-meter event. Sam Stewart ’16 continued to impress, setting a new team record in the 50-yard butterfly (22.69), while the 200-yard freestyle relay team on Tyler Hampton ’15, Tyler Bulakul ’14, Conor Deveney ’15, and Connor Sholtis ’15 also set a new pool record with a time 1:26.06.

Opening the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay, Bulakul teamed up with Tom Zhang’16, Matt Heise ’16 and Nick Egan ’14 to turn in a time of 1:36.11. Ben Grimes ’15 and Conor McAuliffe ’14 placed one-two in the 1,650-yard freestyle, while Sholtis edged out Jeff Anderson ’16 for the top honor in the 200 free.

Brandon Brown ’15 and Aron Reynolds ’14 kept Amherst rolling, taking the top two slots in the 50 back before Zhang and Alex Kang ’15 finished first and second in the 50-yard breaststroke. Stewart then made the NCAA ‘B’ cut, clocking in at 50.32 in the 100 fly, before Deveney top home the top prize in the 50 free (21.97).

White, Asher Lichtig ’16 and Mark Idleman ’15 each surpassed the ‘B’ cut in the 3-meter, with Lichtig and Idleman posting scores of 335.18 and 294.83, respectively. Sholtis earned another win with a 46.95 showing in the 100 free, before Deveney, Heise, Brown and Micshael Rochford ’15 turned in the four fastest times in the 100 back.

Zhang and Kang made quick work of the 100 breast, combining for 13 more Jeff points, before Parker Moody ’14 notched a win in the 500-free by finishing just one, one-hundredth of second (4:50.73) ahead of Hamilton’s John McBratney ’16. White and Idleman each met the ‘B’ cut standard in the 1-meter event with scores of 282.23 and 290.93, respectively, while Jeff Anderson handed in an NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 4:07.53 in the 400 IM.

Amherst returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 26 against MIT.
