BRUNSWICK, Maine - Emily Hyde ’16 posted what is currently the nation’s fastest time in the 200 IM, setting the tone for the Amherst women’s swimming and diving team on the first day of the 2013 NESCAC Championships.

Already handing in Division III’s best 200 IM time during the prelims (2:04.01), Hyde outdid herself in the evening session, breaking her own mark and both the championship and pool records in the process (2:03.15). Hyde later teamed up with Emily Swett ’13, Sarah Conklin ’16 and Katie Vincett ’13 on the 400-yard medley relay, which set a new meet and program record with a ‘B’ cut time of 3:46.58.

Unofficially the nation’s fastest 500 freestyle so far this season, Steph Ternullo ’15 edged out Williams’ Caroline Wilson ’13 by just over one-tenth of a second, touching in with an NCAA ‘A’ cut time of 4:53.21. Teammates Charlotte Chudy ’16 and Audrey Ingerson ’14 also had strong performances, finishing fourth (5:01.08) and sixth (5:01.66), respectively.

Lizzy Linsmayer ’14 got the Jeffs off to a solid start on the boards, winning the 1-meter dive with a pool and school record score of 478.45. Posting the fastest time in the prelims, the Amherst 200-yard freestyle relay team of Vincett, Ashleigh Stoddart ’15, Conklin and Lulu Belak ’14 narrowly missed out on setting a championship meet record, pacing the field with an NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 1:34.97.

The top seed after the morning session, Conklin continued to impress in the finals of the 50 fly with a school record winning time of 25.09. Vincett finished as the runner-up in the 50 free (23.80), followed closely by Stoddart (24.05) and Belak (24.25) in fourth and fifth.

With 733.5 points, Williams closed out the first day atop the leader board, followed by Amherst (655.5), Middlebury (406.5), Tufts (375) and Bates (311) in the top five. Conn. College (271.5), Bowdoin (256) and Hamilton (231) finished sixth through eighth, while Wesleyan (202), Colby (188) and Trinity (165) rounded out the field of 11.
