Men Cruise Past Colby in Opener, 173-103

AMHERST, Mass. – Tyler Bulakul ’14, Conor Deveney ’15 and Alex Kang ’15 each recorded individual wins while also competing on the winning 200-yard Medley Relay squad as the Amherst College men’s swimming and diving team posted a 173-103 victory over Colby College in its opening dual meet of the season Saturday at Pratt Pool.
Also impressing for the Jeffs were a trio of divers who recorded NCAA “B Cut” scores, with Asher Lichtig ’16 (290.02) and Mark Idleman ’15 (284.47) reaching the mark on the one-meter board and Colin White ’14 (313.95) taking the top finish at three meters.
Meanwhile, numerous Jeffs enjoyed strong days in the water as Amherst won 11 of 16 events on the men’s side of the meet. Jeff Anderson ’16 enjoyed a strong debut performance, winning the 200-yard breaststroke (2:15.78) while finishing just behind teammate Nick Egan ’14 (1:46.14) in the 200 free (1:46.48). Egan added to his solid day with a second-place performance in the 100 fee (48.88) behind teammate Connor Sholtis ’15 (47.01).
Deveney, Kang, and Bulakul were victorious in the 100 back (52.57), 100 breast (1:02.18) and 200 fly (1:55.85), respectively, while Ben Grimes ’15 took the 1000-yard freestyle (9:59.23) and Matt Heise ’16 won the 200 back (1:56.24) to round out the winners for Amherst.
The Jeffs will be back in the water on Monday, Nov. 19 at Wesleyan.
