AMHERST, Mass. – Co-captain Kate Vincett ’13 won the 100-yard freestyle and took second in the 100-yard breaststroke as the Amherst College women’s swimming and diving team opened its season with a 157-109 triumph over visiting Colby College at Pratt Pool on Saturday.
Also starring for Amherst were sophomores Courtney Flynn and Sabrina Lee as the Lord Jeffs won 10 of 15 events in the dual meet. Lee triumphed in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.82) and Flynn cruised in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:26.96) while both swimmers were a part of the winning 200-yard Medley Relay squad for Amherst.
After Stephani Ternullo ’15 triumphed in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:38.10), Emily Hyde ’16 began her career with a tight win in the 200 free (2:00.23), edging fellow rookie Morganne Hodsdon of Colby by just over a second. Hyde would later cap an impressive debut meet with a third-place finish (55.14) behind Vincett (54.30) and Lulu Belak ’14 (54.84) in an exciting 100 free.
Abby Hahn ’14 prevented Vincett (1:11.56) from becoming a double winner in the 100 breast as she topped her teammate by .69 seconds, finishing in 1:10.87 with Belak taking third (1:13.92).
Nicole Heise ’13 and Ashleigh Stoddart ’15 were also winners for Amherst, taking the 200-yard butterfly (2:11.41) and 50 free (25.43), respectively. Emily Swett ’13 took first easily in the 200-yard backstroke (2:11.77), beating teammate Aline Kim ’15 (2:17.53) who had earlier finished third in the 100 back (1:04.93).
