Jeffs Edge Out Williams, 127-115

AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst men’s swimming and diving team edged out archrival Williams on Saturday, 127-115 in a thrilling dual-meet at Pratt Pool.
The win marked the Jeffs fifth straight on the season as they improve to 5-0 in dual-meets. The Ephs lost their second straight and are now 2-2 overall this season.
Williams came out strong to start the meet and claimed the first two events of the day in the 400 yard medley relay with a time of 3:24.6 followed by a first place finish in the 1,000 free by Christian Gronbeck ’15 (9:36.40).
The Jeffs claimed their first win of the day in the third event as Connor Sholtis ’15 crossed the 200 free in 1:44.00. Amherst took three of the top-four spots as Parker Moody ’14 and Nick Egan ’14 claimed third (1:44.58) and fourth (1:45.12), respectively.
Grant Johnson ’17 of Williams took home first in the 50 free with a mark of 21.54 but Amherst claimed second through fourth. Alex Dreisbach ’17 finished in 21.97 followed by Reed Patterson ’17 in 22.09 and Tyler Hampton ’15 with a time of 22.12.
Amherst took first place in the next four events beginning with the 200 IM. Greg Han ’17 won the event in 1:54.46 followed by Knox Young ’16 of Williams in second (1:55.94). Colin White ’14 claimed the 1 meter dive with a Pratt Pool record score of 345.90 and Tyler Bulakul ’14 won the 200 fly in 1:53.87. Sholtis won his second event of the day in the 100 free with a time of 47.01.
Benjamin Lin ’17 broke up the Jeffs winning streak by claiming first in the 200 back. He narrowly edged out Conor Deveney ’15 with a time of 1:52.87. Deveney finished in 1:52.91.
Gronbeck claimed another win for Williams in the 500 free with a mark of 4:39.69. Moody and Egan claimed third and fourth, respectively, for the second time. Moody finished in 4:48.34 and Egan placed in 4:49.40.
White swept the diving events with another first-place finish in the 3 meter. He scored 298.80 points to defeat Rohan Bhatt ’15 of Williams who scored 276.45 points to place second.
Amherst finished the meet strong as Han earned his second win of the day in the 200 breast, touching in at 2:05.55. Timothy Latimer '15 , Knox Young '16 and Jon Lin '16 took second (2:08.67), third (2:08.86) and fourth (2:10.14), respectively, but Nick Lafky '17 earned another point for the Jeffs by taking fifth (2:14.72).
In the final event of the day, the Amherst 400 free relay team of Deveney, Hampton, Bulakul and Sholtis beat out Williams 'A' team of Alex McCarter '16, Alexander Nanda '15, Thad Ricotta '15, and Grant Johnson '17 to take home first place with a time of 3:08.66 and claim the meet.
The Jeffs return to the pool on Saturday, Jan. 25 for a dual-meet at MIT scheduled for 1 p.m.
