WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Amherst women’s swimming and diving team rallied in the third and final day of the 2014 NESCAC Championships to pull ahead of Middlebury and finish in second-place.
The reigning conference champions earned eight wins out of 24 events during the three-day meet and set four pool records in the process en route to 1216.5 points. Last year the Jeffs snapped Williams streak of 12 straight NESCAC titles but the Ephs regained the crown with 2,007 points while Middlebury finished third with 1207.
Bates (1132) finished fourth, while Conn. College (1100.5), Bowdoin (813.5) and Tufts (747.5) claimed fifth through seventh, respectively. Wesleyan (574) placed eighth with Hamilton (503), Colby (443) and Trinity (383) rounding out the field of 11.
Sophomore Emily Hyde’s impressive run in her first two NESCAC Championships continued Sunday, earning the Jeffs only win on the day. Hyde claimed first in the 200-yard breaststroke by setting another pool record with a mark of 2:18.11. It marked the second pool record she set during the championships, also earning a win in the 100 breast in day two action. Hyde earned three individual titles and two as a member of a relay team to surpass her four first-place finishes a year ago.
In the first event of the day, Charlotte Chudy ’16 and Audrey Ingerson ’14 provided the Jeffs with two more top-eight finishes, placing fourth and eighth in the 1,650 free, respectively. Chudy touched in 17:15.81 while Ingerson finished in 17:30.35. Both times were NCAA ‘B’ cuts.
Sabrina Lee ’15 concluded her successful championship run, which featured two wins in relays, with a fifth-place showing in the 200 back. The junior swam in a NCAA ‘B’ cut mark of 2:04.60.
Two other Jeffs pulled in top-eight finishes in their respective events with Allison Merz ’14 placing sixth in the 100 free with a time of 53.06 and Cassie Gross ’14 touching in 2:09.77 to earn seventh in the 200 fly.
Last year’s Diver of the Meet, Lizzy Linsmayer ’14, finished third in the 3-meter dive with 444.05 points.
The last event of the day featured a fifth-place showing from the 400 free relay ‘A’ team of Lee, Hyde, Ashleigh Stoddart ’16 and Allison Merz. The quartet finished in 3:31.07, good for another NCAA 'B' cut time.
The Jeffs are back in the pool starting Wednesday, March 19 for the NCAA Championships hosted by IUPUI.
