Three Jeffs Qualify for NCAA Championship
TROY, N.Y. - Three Amherst student-athletes qualified for the Division III National Championships Saturday thanks to a strong showing at the 2014 NCAA Regionals hosted by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
A total of 44 divers from the Northeast-North Region’s 65 institutions participated in the two-day competition, with seven spots up for grabs for the NCAA meet for both genders. To qualify, a student-athlete must meet the qualifying standard at least twice during the qualification period or once at their conference championship meet on either diving board.
On the women’s side, Lizzy Linsmayer ’14 followed up her strong performance at the NESCAC Championships with two NCAA qualifying marks at the NCAA Regional Diving Championships. After earning the league title in the 1-meter dive and placing third in the 3-meter, the senior finished second overall in the 3-meter at the regional championship meet with 512.80 points on 11 dives. She also qualified with a fourth-place finish in the 1-meter with 462.90 points.
For the men, Colin White ’14 and Mark Idleman ’15 both qualified. White, the 2014 NESCAC Champion in the 1-meter, qualified Saturday with 512.55 points on 11 dives and finished fourth. In the 3-meter event, he finished second and totaled 561.35 points. Idleman put together another solid showing by a Jeff, finishing second in the 1-meter dive with 537.55 points and fifth in the 3-meter with 499.75 points.
The NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships are scheduled for Mar. 19 through Mar. 22 and are hosted by IUPUI.
