  • Be enrolled at the college the semester prior to the beginning of their summer internships and the semester after their internships

Students who are studying abroad are eligible to participate in the program, but must contact the Loeb Center to make arrangements for fulfilling the requirements to enroll.

Applying for Internships

Once you become a member of Amherst Select, you will be able to apply for Amherst Select internships through Handshake.  Positions will begin to accept applications towards the end of the fall semester, and new positions will continue to be posted to Handshake throughout the spring semester.

Each employer has identified a deadline for when prospective interns must submit their resumes, cover letters and other application materials. Please make sure to read the position descriptions carefully for both the deadline and application instructions.

You are strongly encouraged to come into the Loeb Center for assistance with preparing your application.

Performance Evaluation Process

Internships not only give you the opportunity to gain work experience, but they also serve the purpose of providing you with insight into how you can grow as a professional.  Every student who participates in an Amherst Select internship will receive a final performance evaluation from internship supervisors.

Performance evaluations will be sent to supervisors at the midpoint of students’ internships.  Supervisors must complete the evaluation, meet with their interns to discuss the evaluation and return the evaluation to the Loeb Center no more than two weeks after the intern’s last day.

Evaluations are kept confidentially in the Loeb Center for up to one year.  Students may request to access evaluations during that period of time.

Recommended Program Timeline for Amherst Select Internship Program Participation

Please use the timeline below as a guide to manage your time throughout the year in order to maximize the level of support you can receive through the Amherst Select Internship Program:

September – Early October

The internship search process can’t begin before you’ve figured out what types of career fields and types you’re interested in working in over the summer. Consider making an appointment with a Loeb Center advisor via Handshake to work on defining your internship targets and goals for the summer.

October - November

Sure, you could search and apply for internships on your own, but it can be a lot easier when you can draw on insights from staff members and your fellow peers.  The Making Mammoth Plans and Internship Preparation Workshops will be held at various times during the fall semester.  Ask a Loeb Center advisor about which Internship Preparation Workshop makes the most since for you.  And, don’t forget to RSVP and attend these workshops early!

If you’ve never had your resume reviewed by a PCA, use this time to go to one of their drop-in appointment sessions held in either the Loeb Center or Frost Café.  You can find their schedule on this webpage.

December

Whew!  It’s been a busy fall semester.  You’ve managed to not only knock it out of the park with your coursework, but you’ve also attended all of the required Amherst Select workshops and gotten your resume approved for upload to Handshake.  After you finish your final exams, make sure to complete the Amherst Select Internship Program Application found in Handshake.

 January – March

Hopefully, you spent a restful break at home with your family. Now, that you are officially enrolled in Amherst Select, you can start applying for the reserved opportunities in Handshake.  Meet with a Loeb Center advisor to get feedback on your applications.  And, make sure that you notify the Associate Director for Internship Programs

Over the spring semester, the Loeb Center will host Professional Success Workshops geared towards teaching students how to be successful interns within the modern workplace and how to secure the necessary resources to support themselves over the summer.  Attending one of these workshops is a requirement in order to receive college funding for an unpaid internship opportunity.

 March - May

Speaking of funding, did you know we offer funding for unpaid internship opportunties? Once you’ve accepted an offer for an unpaid internship opportunity, you should submit an application for Loeb Center funding as soon as possible. The application can be found on Handshake and will open on January 1.  The last day to submit an application will be May 1.  Students enrolled in the Amherst Select program will receive preference during the funding review process. Read more about the Loeb Center Internship Funding Program on this page.

Please note that Mieklejohn Fellows seeking funding for an unpaid internship will need to contact the Program Director for the Mieklejohn Fellows Program, Casey Jo Dufresne at cdufrene@amherst.edu.
