Carnegie

Purpose: The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing cooperation between nations and promoting active international engagement by the United States.  As one of the world's leading think tanks specializing in international affairs, the Endowment conducts programs of research, discussion, publication and education. The Junior Fellows Program is designed to provide a substantive work experience for students who have a serious career interest in the area of international affairs.

Eligibility: Applicants must be graduating seniors, or have graduated in the last academic year AND must not have begun graduate studies.
Applicants do not have to be U.S. citizens however, all applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S.

Award amount and conditions: Junior Fellows work as research assistants to senior associates working on the Carnegie Endowment's projects: democracy/rule of law, the Middle East, non-proliferation, trade and equity development, international economics, China-related issues, Russian/Eurasian affairs, Central Asian affairs, South Asian affairs, energy and climate program, and U.S. role in the world. All Fellowships begin on August 1.  Fellows are hired for approximately 1 year. Junior Fellows receive a monthly salary equivalent to approximately $35,000 annually (subject to federal, state, and local taxes). Benefits include medical, dental, and life insurance as well as vacation leave. Fellows are responsible for their own housing.

Number offered: 8-10 per year. Amherst can nominate 2 candidates.

Deadline: Preliminary applications are due in the Office of Fellowships by mid- November (specific date is determined early in the fall semester).

Application materials: Preliminary application forms are available in the Office of Fellowships, 213 Converse Hall once the Carnegie Foundation opens their annual application process, usually by mid-October.
