Marshall

Purpose: An award by the British government as a means of expressing appreciation of the aid given to the British by the United States under the Marshall Plan. The award funds a US citizen to study at a British University for two years. These scholars are seen as potential leaders and decision-makers in the US. This award gives scholars a first-hand opportunity to gain a lasting understanding and appreciation of British values and way of life. It also serves to strengthen the enduring relationship between the US and the UK.

Eligibility: Open only to United States citizens who (at the time they take up their Scholarship) hold a first degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the United States with a minimum GPA of 3.7 and must apply within two years of graduating from their undergraduate college or university. Marshall Scholars are required to take a degree at a British university. They are also expected to spend some of their vacation time in the United Kingdom. Minimum qualification for application is an A- (or 3.7 on a 4.0 scale).

Persons already studying for or holding a British degree or degree-equivalent qualification are not eligible to apply for a Marshall Scholarship.

Award amount and conditions: University fees, cost of living expenses, annual book grant, thesis grant, research and daily travel grants, fares to and from the United States and, where applicable, a contribution towards the support of a dependent spouse. There is the possibility of an extension into a third year.

Number offered: 40 per year. Amherst can nominate as many candidates as deemed eligible.  A limited number of One Year Marshall Scholarships are available.  These Scholarships are for one academic year (i.e. 12 months) and cannot be exteneded.

Deadline: Preliminary applications are due in the Office of Fellowships early in September.

Application materials: Preliminary application forms are available in the Office of Fellowships, 213 Converse Hall.
