WHAT IS THE AMHERST SELECT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM (ASIP)?
The Amherst Select Internship Program is an exciting program that features over 150 internship opportunities in the Pioneer Valley and around the world. These opportunities are offered by alumni, parents and friends of Amherst College. Students complete the requirements for the program during the fall and then apply for summer internships during the spring semester.
WHO CAN APPLY FOR ASIP?
First-years, sophomores, and juniors can all participate in the program. There is no "application", rather a set of requirements that must be completed to gain access to the internships.
WHEN IS THE DEADLINE TO APPLY TO ASIP?
There is no official deadline, although we highly recommend that all requirements be completed by Thanksgiving. Workshops will be offered less frequently after that, and you will not be able to apply if you have not completed the requirements. Here's a timeline to help you manage the process.
WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS? (Fall 2013 dates are listed here).
- Resume approved in Quest (Come visit a PCA now. )
- Attend a cover letter workshop
- Attend an interviewing workshop
- Attend an orientation
- Sign the Career Center student code of conduct
DO I HAVE TO BE A US CITIZEN TO APPLY/QUALIFY?
No, citizenship is not required. International students are eligible.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I DO NOT COMPLETE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR ASIP?
ASIP is just one of many resources for finding an internship. The Career Center can help you explore the other resources and options. Funding is not tied to ASIP - you have just as good a chance of getting funding if you find your internship some other way. Many students have done so.
DOES AMHERST COLLEGE PLACE ME IN AN INTERNSHIP OR DO I FIND MY OWN INTERNSHIP?
For both general internships, and for Amherst Select, you will have access to a list of companies and organizations that are offering internships to Amherst College students. You will apply to internships that interest you and site supervisors will review applicants, conduct interviews and hire interns.
HOW LONG ARE THE INTERNSHIPS?
It varies, but most internships are full time for 8-12 weeks. Details regarding start/ end dates and working hours should be discussed between you and your supervisor before you accept an offer.
WHAT WILL MY INTERNSHIP POSITION BE LIKE?
Every internship position is different; not all internships are structured. Some alumni are interested in having an intern, but are very flexible on the structure and content of the internship position. In this case, you can negotiate with them on the number of hours you work per week, internship responsibilities, etc.
CAN I DO AN INTERNATIONAL INTERNSHIP?
Yes, there are internships sites outside of the United States.
WHAT HAPPENS IF MY SECOND CHOICE OFFERS ME AN INTERNSHIP, BUT MY FIRST CHOICE HASN'T YET?
Tell the internship site that made you an offer that you need a few days to think about the offer. Then, call your first-choice site and ask them for an update on the status of your application (e.g. "I received an internship offer from another company, but you're my first choice; however, I have to respond to them by xyz date. Would you please tell me when you have a decision?")
If you're in this situation and having trouble deciding which site to choose, feel free to call the Career Center at x2265. The Career Center staff are happy to help you troubleshoot these types of situations.
Under no circumstance is it acceptable to accept the offer from the second choice site and then reject it at a later time when your first choice makes you an offer. This is stated in the Career Center's Recruting Code of Conduct. Such behavior will terminate your participation from the Amherst Select program and you will not be eligible for Amherst College internship funding.
IS MY INTERNSHIP PAID OR UNPAID?
Unfortunately, it is difficult to be completely accurate in stating whether a position is paid or unpaid. Some employers don't know whether or not they will be able to provide a stipend until March, April or even May. Also, there are many positions in the database that have been funded by Amherst College in the past; however, this doesn't guarantee that they will be funded again this year. (Click Funding on the left column for more information)
Tip: If a position is listed as unpaid, ask a potential employer about a possible stipend, working hours, etc. after s/he makes you an offer.
IS FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR SUMMER INTERNSHIPS?
There are several opportunities for funding from Amherst College. More information about these opportunities can be found at https://www.amherst.edu/campuslife/careers/students/jobs/internshipshome/funding.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I GET AN INTERNSHIP OFFER AT AN UNPAID SITE, BUT DON'T KNOW WHETHER OR NOT I WILL RECEIVE FUNDING?
Explain the situation to your employer: tell them that you have submitted an application for funding, and that your acceptance is contingent upon receiving funding.
CAN I APPLY FOR FUNDING IF I’VE ALREADY RECEIVED FUNDING FROM AMHERST COLLEGE IN THE PAST?
Any restrictions or limitations regarding past or future awards will be specified in the descriptions on the funding website. Also, students who receive a Civic Engagement Scholarship and do not complete the program requirements will be ineligible for future CES awards and will return all or part of the amount received.
CAN I APPLY FOR FUNDING IF I HAVE NOT SECURED AN INTERNSHIP YET?
As a part of the funding application, the supervisor must fill out a form. If you have not yet secured your internship, but anticipate that you will, we recommend filling out the application by the deadline. If all that is outstanding is the supervisor form, you may still be considered, depending upon how long it takes to secure the position.
