Counseling Center Policy on Confidentiality

 Amherst College campus

We take confidentiality very seriously, and our confidentiality policy follows the ethical and legal requirements of the State of Massachusetts, and is in keeping with the ethical guidelines provided by the American Psychological Association, National Association of Social Workers, American Psychiatric Association and American Medical Association.

The Counseling Center staff is committed to maintaining your privacy and the confidentiality of all student mental health information. Be assured that your conversations with our clinicians are privileged, and will remain private. Any information you share will not be released without your written consent, unless required by law or other special circumstances, which are outlined in the Counseling Center’s privacy practices policy.

While we keep clinical records when we meet with students, they are not a part of your educational record and therefore have additional protections under the law.  If you have any questions about this policy, please raise them with your counselor immediately.
