Peer Mediation at Amherst College

In cases where students wish to settle their differences through mediation as an alternative to initiating a formal proceeding with the Dean of Student Conduct, and when the Dean of Student Conduct concurs with this course of action, mediated negotiation may be attempted to resolve disputes. Mediation is a voluntary process in which trained, impartial and neutral mediators help others negotiate a dispute and develop their own mutually acceptable solution.

The agreed-upon terms of a mediated resolution will be incorporated in a statement which must be signed by parties involved in the dispute. Because of mediation’s confidential nature, a wide variety of topics can be addressed without participants needing to fear that they will be reported. Only in the case of harm to self or others, do mediators have to specifically report incidents.

Students electing to resolve grievances through mediated dispute resolution should seek guidance from the Office of Student Affairs.  In some cases, including complaints of sexual misconduct, mediation will not be available as a grievance procedure.
