Advancement encompasses Alumni and Parent Programs (APP), Development, Foundation and Corporate Relations, Leadership GivingGift Plannning, Principal Giving, Advancement Operations and Advancement Communications. Advancement promotes Amherst’s mission, helps to raise awareness of the college and its goals and encourages generosity and engagement among Amherst’s alumni, families and friends. Advancement accomplishes this by nurturing long-term and mutually enriching relationships with and among these important groups.

Advancement develops and directs comprehensive fundraising campaigns and alumni and parent engagement activities to support the college. On June 30, 2013, the college celebrated the successful end of the Lives of Consequence: A Campaign for Amherst, a five-year comprehensive campaign that increased financial aid; broadened access for students; and supported the faculty through endowed professorships and research and teaching support, which help foster modern and interdisciplinary approaches in the classroom. Lives of Consequence allowed the college to upgrade existing facilities and build new ones to strengthen the connection between living and learning. More than 72% of Amherst alumni made a gift during the campaign and more than 85% engaged with the college over the past five years by volunteering, serving as mentors, attending or participating in an event including online, regional and on-campus programming, and voting in alumni trustee elections among other activities.

The Annual Fund is a critical component of the campaign and of Amherst's ongoing fundraising efforts. Each year the Annual Fund provides approximately 7% of the operating budget (about $10 million) to the college. Amherst is proud to have one of the highest alumni participation rates in the country, annually striving to reach 60% participation.

As part of this campaign, APP is spearheading Amherst Connects, a program to connect alumni to each other, to current students and to the college. Amherst Connects fosters alumni relationships and, by doing so, creates more and better opportunities for student research, internships and service.

Advancement is housed in two buildings: Pontypool (22 Snell Street) and Smith House (22 Hitchcock Road).
