The Amherst College Post Office, under the direction of Supervisor Donald Kells, is located in the Keefe Campus Center. The Post Office is a full-service office for stamps, parcel post, express mail and other mail services. Packages for FedEx, Airborne, DHL and the United Parcel Service and other express packages are all accepted at this office. The campus delivery service serves the faculty, administration and department offices with two daily deliveries. All students have “AC boxes” in the Post Office.
During the academic year, the stamp window is open on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The package window is open on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. and also on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon.
Students must provide the Residential Life office and Dean of Students’ Office with personal contact information for reasons of public safety and emergency contact. Students will need to log in to ACData, select the "Students" menu, and choose "Address, Telephone and Mass Notification" to securely submit their information. Personal contact information will not be made public without consent.
Most students have cell phones or mobile devices and choose not to order wired phone service at the college, but it is available from Verizon in some dormitories. Contact IT at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have questions about wired phone service.

Amherst accounts for students provide access to e-mail, network drives, the college website and other resources available over the Amherst network. The college’s general policies and codes of conduct apply to the electronic environment just as they apply in all other college settings. The Electronic Resources Acceptable Use Policy supplements these existing standards by describing the special rights and responsibilities that come with use of the college’s electronic resources. Passwords should never be shared, and accounts should not be shared with or lent to others. Each student is responsible for all activity in his or her account.
If a student suspects his/her password has been compromised it should be changed immediately. This can be done by going to https://www.amherst.edu/help/passwords. Students who forget their passwords can go to the Help Desk in Seeley Mudd during college business hours and have an IT staff member assist them. They must present their college ID.
Amherst email is available online via a web browser at exchange.amherst.edu. Students may also manage their e-mail on mobile devices or personal computers using email clients. Directions for setting up these programs, as well as more information about email, are available on the IT website.
All student residence halls have hardwired Ethernet and/or wireless network (802.11a/b/g/n) connections for accessing the Amherst network and the Internet. Devices using the wired and wireless networks must be registered. Students should not bring their own routers or wireless access points — these can interfere with the College network and even prevent other computers from getting to the Internet. Instructions for registering computers, mobile and other devices to use the college network are available on the IT website.
Wireless networking is available in campus buildings as well as major outdoor areas (Freshman Quad, Valentine Quad, Webster Circle, Pratt Field, Gooding Field and the softball field).
IT provides many services over the network, including Userfiles personal network storage space (also known as the “U: drive”), the content of which is backed up every night. Students can access their U: drives from any computer on campus. Learn more about Amherst network storage and network services on the IT website.
A complete list of IT services available to students is available on the IT website on the IT Services webpage. Select the tab “By Audience” then select “Students”. While IT staff will help a student fix an operating system, virus or networking problem, they are not authorized to repair hardware. Therefore, IT strongly urges every student to purchase an extended hardware warranty from his or her computer vendor.
Students having problems with their computer operating systems, viruses or spyware or the Amherst network may call the IT Help Desk at (413) 542–2526 or visit the IT Help Desk on the first floor of Seeley Mudd.
IT provides free antivirus software for all students. Instruction on how to download ESET software is available on the IT website.
The current version of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and more) for Windows or Mac and the current version (upgrade only) of windows are available for under $10. Complete the online order form on the IT website.
Public computers for the college community’s use are located in the Seeley Mudd Center for Creative Technology, the Robert Frost Library’s A Level, Keefe Science Library and the Music Library. All facilities have Windows and Macintosh systems running Microsoft Office and many other applications, such as EndNote, PhotoShop, Illustrator and InDesign. Animation, video and GIS applications are available in specialized computer labs. Professional-quality scanners are available in Seeley Mudd and on the A Level of Frost Library.
Students who are interested in doing multimedia projects for their courses may check out equipment and receive training from Academic Technology Services staff. Located on the first floor of the Seeley Mudd building are facilities containing hardware and software for editing video and audio, composing and recording digital music, developing mobile applications and building 3D games or simulations.
Some academic departments have their own computer labs for classes or for student use. In many cases, these computers run software that is required for a course or special study and that is not available for students to install on their own computers.
Public printers are available for use in several campus locations, including Seeley Mudd, Frost Library’s A Level, the Keefe Science Library and the Music Library. They include high-speed black-and-white and color laser printers, as well as a large-format color printer in Seeley Mudd. Laser printing costs start at $0.06 for one double-sided black-and-white page, and large-format charges depend on the output size. Individual printing charges are automatically added to student bills.
The Amherst College ID is used in all campus dining facilities and for access to residence halls, athletic facilities, select classrooms and special functions. The ID also allows students to check out books at the Amherst College Library and all the other Five College libraries. Off campus, the ID card entitles students to discounts at movie theaters and with many local merchants.
Students may use their ID cards as a debit card on campus by depositing funds to create an AC Dollar$ account. The account operates on a declining balance system and may be used at any time. An ID card with AC Dollar$ may be used to purchase food and services from select locations. All campus dining facilities accept ACDollar$ for food purchases outside of the normal meal plan. More than half of all campus vending machines, all dorm laundry machines and the photocopiers in the library have card readers that accept ACDollar$. College ID cards are produced in the Dining Services offices, located in the basement of Valentine Hall.
