Pete Mackey, Chief Communications Officer

The Office of Communications is responsible for sharing the story and news of Amherst College with external and campus audiences through all available media, including the College website, print publications, social media, photography, and videography. Print publications of the office include Amherst magazine, the College Catalog, recruitment publications used by the Admission Office and campaign publications used by the Advancement Office. Communications also oversees the College’s work with the media; its sports information program; and College-wide events, including each year’s Commencement Weekend.

The office helps publicize the wide array of lectures, films, plays, concerts and exhibitions the College offers to the public at no charge. This includes helping offices and student organizations place posters promoting these events on bulletin boards throughout campus. Events can also be promoted online on Amherst’s Message Center and Event Calendar and the Five College Calendar of Events. The office is available to advise student organizations in organizing and promoting student events. For further information about event management and promotions, contact Patricia Allen in the Office of Communications at or (413) 542–8094.

The Sports Information Office, which is part of Communications, supports Amherst’s intercollegiate athletics programs with game and news coverage, live video-streaming of games, and game management. The office employs paid student reporters to cover athletic events, keep game statistics and write game recaps and other feature stories. Students interested in such work should contact Director of Sports Information Mike O’Brien at or (413) 542–2344.
