Queer Resource Center, Basement of Morrow Dormitory
Angie Tissi-Gassoway, Director
Amherst College is a place where queer students and allies have thrived. Here you will find a diverse and vibrant lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual and pansexual (LGBTQQIAP) community.
The queer community is centered on the Queer Resource Center (QRC), whose mission is to serve as the hub of the queer community on campus. The Center provides numerous events, resources and leadership opportunities for all students at Amherst College. We encourage you to check our website to stay informed of events on campus, as well as to connect to resources.
There are many resources for Amherst students interested in queer topics. The Queer Resource Center, located in the basement of Morrow dormitory, has a library of LGBTQQIAP-themed books, movies, magazines and other information. The QRC is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. through 5 p.m. and Tuesday from 10 p.m. to 12 a.m. In addition, we host weekly meetings and social events outside of our regular hours. The QRC is a great place to study or just hang out. We offer Queer & Trans 101/Advanced Trainings and Speakers Bureau Panels to learn about and hear the stories of our Amherst College queer students.
The QRC is home to many queer student organizations. Pride Alliance, TransActive, Queer Women of Amherst College (QWAC), Queer Trans People of Color (QTPOC), Amherst Athletes & Allies (AAA) and Men of the Valley are registered student organizations with a mission to serve our queer and trans students and their allies on campus. Through educational and social programming, the QRC addresses topics such as coming out; LGBTQQIAP athletes; the intersection of identities such as sexuality and race, religion, class, gender identity and other identities; HIV/AIDS awareness; and sexual health. These organizations seek to improve understanding of and support for LGBTQQIAP issues.
Students with any questions about these organizations or queer life on campus in general should feel free to check out the QRC website/Facebook, email the Director at firstname.lastname@example.org, talk to a group member or come to our weekly meetings or open hours. Both occur in the QRC; these times are listed on the Queer Resource Center website. We look forward to seeing you on campus!
Angie Tissi-Gassoway, director of the Queer Resource Center, holds both a Masters in Education and Public Health. She has focused her studies on intergroup dialogue, training and leadership development. Additionally, she is available to meet with any student (in the QRC or elsewhere on campus) to provide information and/or support. For more information about the QRC or to schedule an appointment, contact Angie at email@example.com.
