New Students

Matthew Friedrich 2015. FOOT Assistant Coordinator, Canoeing Captain.
I am a Class of 2015 Mathematics and Economics double major from Denver, Colorado. Here at Amherst, I am a member of the Amherst College Rugby team and the Investment Club. I love hiking, backpacking, camping, rock climbing, skiing, and canoeing, I had a wonderful time as a FOOTie my freshman year, and I look forward to returning as a leader for my final year at Amherst!

Rachel Duong 2016. Canoeing Captain.
I am a Class of 2016 Biology major on the pre-med track from sunny San Diego, CA.  On campus, I'm involved in a range of activities on campus, from leading runs for The Running Network to performing in Rhythm and Shoes, a musical theatre club, to contributing to Project Salud, a club that raises money for a medical clinic in Peru.  I've been a FOOTie and a FOOT leader for the canoeing trip and I'm so excited to be leading canoeing again this year!  Having the chance to meet a great group of first-years and spend three days on the river is one of the highlights of the year; it's one reason I am studying abroad in the spring instead of the fall.  I love getting away from campus and enjoying the last bit of summer before classes begin.

John He, 2016. Canoeing Captain.
I am a Class of 2016 Law, Jurisprudence and Social Thought major from Shanghai, China. I like backpacking and camping, and I go rock climbing regularly during the school year. Last year I was on the e-board of the Amherst College Outing Club, and I also write and edit for the Amherst Indicator. This will be my second year leading the FOOT Canoeing trip, and I'm pumped to paddle for three days and camp in the stars and woods with some awesome people!

Conor Haley 2017. Canoeing.
I am a class of 2017 Statistics major from Medfield, Massachusetts. As a member of the Amherst College Swim team, I love the water and can't wait to lead a canoeing trip this year!

Stephanie Kelemen, 2017. Canoeing.
HEY!  My name is Steph and I am Biochemistry/Biophysics major in the class of 2017.  On campus, I am a member of the Amherst College Emergency Medical Services and Amherst Dance.  Since I am from Boulder, Colorado, I naturally love the outdoors!  In particular, I work as a water sports instructor and lifeguard at a lake in the summer.  I cannot wait to meet all of you and lead an incredible canoeing trip!

Grace Nash, 2016. Canoeing.
Hey guys! I am a member of the Class of 2016 and a History major! I'm from Kenilworth, IL which is a northern suburb of Chicago. Here at Amherst, I tutor with Girls Inc. and work as a resource advocate for Craig's Doors Homeless Shelter. This summer I will be interning at Northwestern Center on Wrongful Convictions and I look forward to leading my second canoe FOOT trip this fall!

Jenni Cullen, 2016. Canoeing.
I am a Class of 2016 Mathematics and German double major from Oreland, Pennsylvania. At Amherst I spend most of my free time in and around the music building, singing in the concert choir and the DQ. I also enjoy canoeing and hiking and am really looking forward to leading a canoeing trip this year!

Jo Moore 2017. Canoeing.
I'm a Class of 2017 potential Classics major from Freeport, Maine. I sing and row crew here at Amherst, and I love spending as much time outside as possible. I had a lot of fun as a FOOTie, so I'm super excited to be leading Canoeing this fall!

Virginia Hassell 2016. Advanced Hiking Captain.
I’m a proud member of the Class of 2016.  A biology major from the area just outside of Virginia Beach, Virginia, I love hiking, running, sports and all outdoor activities.  At Amherst, I am an AAS senator, an Athletic Team Engagement Leader, and a staff writer for The Student.  I look forward to my third year of involvement with FOOT and leading the three-day Advanced Hiking excursion.

Matt GoodSmith 2015. Advanced Hiking.
I am a Class of 2015 pre-med Geology major from right outside of Chicago, IL. In addition to my involvement with the FOOT program, I play trumpet in the jazz ensemble and combos, I co-host a radio show, and I’m on the Ultimate team. I cannot wait for to lead my third and final FOOT trip as an Advanced Hiking leader!
