Purpose: Churchill Scholarships offer American students of exceptional ability the opportunity to pursue graduate studies in engineering, mathematics and the sciences at the University of Cambridge. The Scholarships also provide the opportunity to experience life in Britain.
Eligibility: Applicants must be citizens of the United States. Before enrolling at Cambridge, one must be between the ages of 19 and 26, hold a bachelor's degree or its equivalent from a United States college or university, and may not have attained a doctorate.
Applicants must demonstrate:
- high achievement in academic work as indicated by course grades and scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)
- capacity for original, creative work as shown by special recognition and letters of reference
- demonstrated leadership and outstanding personal qualities
Award amount and conditions: All tuition and fees to attend the University of Cambridge. In addition, students receive a living allowance of £10,000 if enrolled in a nine-month academic program and £12,000 if enrolled in a full-year academic program. They also receive a travel allowance of $1000 + visa fees. The total award for a Scholarship recipient is $45,000-$50,000.
Except for reasons of health or other emergency, a Churchill Scholar makes a commitment to complete the program and requirements of study for which he or she is admitted. Failure to fulfill this commitment will require the refund of funds expended on the student's behalf.
Also, two narrative reports describing the Cambridge experience are required, one in January and the second upon completion of the academic program.
Number offered: At least 14 per year. Amherst can nominate 2 candidates.
Deadline: Preliminary applications are due in the Office of Fellowships in mid-October (see Deadlines and Events.) These applications include a personal statement, proposed program of study, and four letters of recommendation. Please bear in mind that you must apply separately to the University of Cambridge; that deadline is much earlier than the Churchill deadline.
Application materials: Preliminary application forms will be available on this website by mid-September (see How to Apply.) If you are interested in applying, please contact us for complete details and winning examples.
