Purpose: In recognition of the benefits of higher education, the Saint Andrew's Society of New York State provides significant funding for two Scottish graduate students to study in the United States and two Scottish-American students to study in Scotland. Initiated by the Society at its 200th anniversary, in the past fifty years the program has consistently attracted the top students from the most competitive institutions of learning. The Society has provided over 150 scholarships to promote cultural interchange and goodwill between Scotland and the United States since 1954.
Eligibility: Applicants must be U.S. citizens of some Scottish descent who are graduating seniors in the year that they apply. Applicants must reside or attend school within 250 miles of New York State. Applicants must demonstrate the significance of studying in Scotland. Preference will be given to candidates who have not previously studied in the United Kingdom. Proof of application to their selected school will be required for finalists.
Academic achievement, extracurricular activities, financial need and the applicant's statement of personal objectives are all important areas of consideration.
Award amount and conditions: The scholarship provides funds to a total of $30,000 to be used initially against tuition, then board, transportation, and other expenses.
Number offered: 2 per year. Amherst can nominate 1 candidate.
Deadline: Preliminary applications are due in the Office of Fellowships in late October (see Deadlines and Events).
Application materials: Preliminary application forms are available on this website in the fall of the academic year. (see How to Apply)
