Cooper House

Cooper House
Cooper House is now home of the Black Studies and Philosophy departments. This large, French Second Empire building was formerly a residence. The adaptive reuse was completed in 2002, utilizing much of the original structure and adding on to it to create the square footage necessary for the new academic programs housed there.

The renovation of Cooper House was executed with a sensitivity for the character of this historic  mansion. In many offices and hallways, original floors were preserved. Much of the original decorative woodwork, including the rear staircase, wainscoting and doors were removed, restored and reinstalled. The main stair uses components from the original oak stair. Much of the exterior masonry was retained, as were most of the original structural components.
