Why I became a SHE: I became a SHE because I want to help create a space for students to have conversations and learn about various health topics that are often stigmatized in our society. I hope to promote a culture of wellbeing for Amherst students to prioritize their own wellbeing and the wellbeing of others they encounter inside and outside of our community.

Why I became a SHE: Growing up, my sex ed classes were definitely lacking, and I felt woefully underprepared for so many health-related topics coming into college. I joined the SHE team because I don't want anyone else here to ever feel as lost as I did when it comes to knowing their own bodies and keeping themselves safe/healthy. I love this job because I get to help people for a living!

Why I became a SHE: Growing up in a conservative town, my health education was always "if you do X, you will die and nobody will love you”. Luckily, I knew they were wrong and had educated myself on my own time, but I was surprised by the lack of information a lot of my peers were experiencing. I quickly became the person people would come to with any questions, and I loved it. When I learned of the SHEs, I was so excited by the idea of making it my job and learning how to teach my peers in a more professional manner. With my experience as a SHE, I hope to make a difference in the Amherst community as well as the communities I will belong to in the future.

Why I became a SHE: Recognizing the disparity between access to healthcare and health education across disparate cultures, socioeconomic classes, and racial and ethnic minorities, along with the intersectional implications across those spectrums, is the main reason why I became a SHE. Through my work, I want to aid in broaching the gap between access to healthcare and health education by paying the closest attention and working most diligently on issues compounded by marginalized identities.
