Mission Statements

In anchoring global realities at Amherst College, the Center for International Student Engagement (CISE) supports students of international experience through advocacy, centralized resources, and space for community building and critical reflection.

This center falls under the Office of Identity and Cultural Resources (OICR), which is comprised of six distinct resource centers: Center for International Student Engagement, Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, Class and Access Resource Center, Multicultural Resource Center, Queer Resource Center, and Women’s and Gender Center. The mission of the Office of Identity and Cultural Resources is to support students as they celebrate and develop their identities and create inclusive communities that enrich their Amherst College experience.

CISE PROGRAM ORGANIZER (2022-2023)

All class years are welcome to apply.

Application Timeline

  • Applications are due by Friday, April 15th at 11:59pm ET.

  • Interviews will be held on the week of April 18th. 

Training Timeline

  • Once hired, you are required to move in early on Saturday, August 27.

  • All student staff in the Office of Identity and Cultural Resources are required to attend training from Sunday, August 28 - Tuesday, August 30.

  • We will host in-service workshops/training the first Monday of each month (beginning in October) from 7 - 8pm.

Position Summary

The Program Organizer in the CISE oversees the development and implementation of center programs and is responsible for promoting a learning environment and welcoming community space. 

Responsibilities:

  • Support the continuation of CISE’s signature programs, including International Interactions, Racialization of International Students, & Break programs. 

  • Establish new initiatives that align with CISE’s mission.

  • Collaborate with the director and fellow student staff, student organizations, other resource centers, guests, and campus and community partners.

  • Accept full responsibility over projects and complete them in a timely manner.

  • Communicate regularly with the center director and fellow student staff, especially if problems arise or if unable to complete a task or project.

  • May serve on the cross-center program committee.

  • Attend required training, in-service, and meetings (staff, 1:1, etc.)

  • Hold knowledge of and have strong interest in uplifting the voices and experiences of historically and presently marginalized student communities, with an emphasis on the international student experience. 

  • Learn and share information about the Amherst College community, campus resources, and best practices in serving students at Amherst. 

  • Greet and engage with all visitors to the center to foster an inclusive and welcoming space.

Qualifications:

  • Enrolled at Amherst College for the 2022 - 2023 academic year.

  • In good academic and disciplinary standing.

  • Knowledge of Google Apps (Docs, Sheets, Slides) and Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Highly collaborative, organized, and able to address needs in the moment.

  • Social justice-oriented.

  • Able to balance multiple obligations while being accountable to our team.

  • Dedicated to creating an inclusive community.

  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal communication skills.

The Program Organizer reports to David Ko, Director of the Center for International Student Engagement.

Time Commitment and Salary

  • The starting salary is $15.25/hour.

  • The Program Organizer is expected to work 8 - 10 hours/week. These hours include attending regularly scheduled team meetings and one-on-one meetings with David Ko as well as planning and executing programs.

  • Student staff are expected to remain an employee of CISE for the 2022 - 2023 academic year. Employment in future years is contingent upon satisfactory job performance. There will be check-ins throughout the year with David Ko to discuss strengths, areas of opportunity, and overall contributions and progress.

  • Student staff will be paid for additional hours re: required training, in-service workshops, etc. 

  • The following training times are required: 

    • Sunday, August 28 - Tuesday, August 30

    • The first Monday of each month from 7 - 8pm (beginning in October) 

  • The Program Organizer’s first day is Sunday, August 28, 2022.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT LEADER (2023)

The CISE is hiring International Student Leaders for New International Student Pre-Orientation 2023!

The CISE's New International Student Pre-Orientation is a required (and fun!) program for new international students and exchange visitors. Pre-Orientation is an opportunity for us to welcome new international students to campus, help them tap into Amherst's many resources, prepare for their Amherst experience, and build community with one another!  

The CISE seeks International Student Leaders (ISLs) to drive Pre-Orientation. ISLs are expected to connect with admitted international students over the summer; welcome new international students to Amherst, lead the various sessions and activities of Pre-Orientation in the late summer; and conduct cohort check-in meetings during the first weeks of the fall semester. ISLs serve as a welcoming connection point for newly arrived international students, and are expected to lend a helping hand, an open heart, and honest advice as new students settle into Amherst College life.

Application Timeline

  • ISL applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, with a priority deadline of April 15, 2023. 

  • Interviews will be held on April 18-22, 2023.

  • Priority decisions will be shared on April 27-29, 2023.

  • Pre-Summer meeting will be held on May 8, 2023

Responsibilities and expectations:

  • Spring 2023:

    • Attending an ISL Pre-Summer Meeting

  • Summer 2023:

    • Availability to connect virtually with incoming international students in the summer months before Pre-Orientation

    • Answering questions honestly and providing guidance as incoming students learn about their new environment

  • Pre-Orientation 2023:

    • Attending a 2-day ISL training before Pre-Orienation 

    • Designing and facilitating sessions and activities

    • Mentoring and guiding a cohort of new international students

    • Cultivating a sense of community among new international students

  • Fall 2023:

    • Coordinate and facilitate pre-o reunion and check-in meetings with your cohort of new international students during the first three weeks of the semester

Qualifications:

  • Current Amherst College student, studying on-campus in Fall 2023

  • Personal commitment to the CISE's vision: a world in which borders do not dictate access to opportunity, knowledge, and human connection

  • Ability to work independently and within a team

  • Willingness to be vulnerable, open, and honest with new students

  • Dedication to creating an inclusive community and interweaving intersectional identity-based social justice work with international reflection

  • Must reside within the U.S. at the time of employment

  • August, 24-29 Pre-Orientation 

  • September, TBD Pre-O Reunion

Compensation:

International Student Leaders will receive a stipend of $550 upon completion of Pre-Orientation and cohort meetings.
