Earth First! Roadshow at Amherst on April 23rd.

Earth First! Roadshow Presentation and Workshops: A Grassroots Ecological Direct Action Movement

When: Thursday, April 23 at 4:30 p.m.

Where: O'Connor Commons, Charles Pratt Dormitory, Amherst College.

The Earth First! Roadshow is coming to Amherst to give a participatory presentation about the Earth First! movement and the possibilities for grassroots organizing, direct action and civil disobedience on behalf of the environment. This presentation will take place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on April 23. We will break for an hour so that everyone can get some food, and we will pick up again at 7:30 p.m. (if there is interest) with some innovative direct action workshops.

The traveling group includes activists from various bioregions representing ecological campaigns against logging, mining, road expansion, ocean exploitation, energy infrastructure and urban development. Also on the agenda of these events will be discussions of a new wave of political repression, coined the “Green Scare”, where environmentalists have experienced a documented increase in government surveillance, harassment and even entrapment.

The Earth First! movement goes back to the 70s and described itself as follows: "Earth First! was named in 1979 in response to a lethargic, compromising and increasingly corporate environmental community. Earth First! takes a decidedly different tack towards environmental issues. We believe in using all the tools in the tool box, ranging from grassroots organizing and involvement in the legal process to civil disobedience and monkeywrenching."

This event is sponsored by the Amherst College Responsible Endowment Coalition, the Green Amherst Project, and the UMass Eco-Coalition as part of UMass EarthWeek 2009 and is supported by Valley Free Radio's Enviro Show.
