Amherst College is committed to the welfare of its faculty, staff, students and visitors. Preparing an emergency preparedness plan and allocating resources to respond to possible emergencies is one way the College meets this commitment. The plan was created in accordance with the laws, regulations, and policies that govern emergency preparedness and reflects the most current thinking in this area.
Amherst College's objectives during an emergency are to:
- Protect and preserve the lives of students, staff, faculty, and the public;
- Minimize damage to the natural and built environment;
- Minimize disruption of College operations and activities;
- Facilitate immediate communications and information regarding response activities;
- Effectively manage response operations to emergencies impacting Amherst College;
- And coordinate with internal and external partners during emergencies.
Emergency preparedness and response activities at Amherst College applies to all students, staff, faculty, and visitors on the Amherst College campus in Amherst, Massachusetts. This includes rental housing properties, the Emily Dickinson Museum, Book and Plow Farm, and Woodside Children’s Center. The Amherst College Emergency Operation Plan (EOP) does not apply to the Lord Jeffrey Inn, the Amherst Golf Club or the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. Concepts in this plan apply to any incident when the health, safety, security, or reputation of our community are threatened. It is the official Emergency Operations Plan for Amherst College and supersedes any plans, policies, or procedures relating to emergency response operations. Nothing in this plan shall be construed in a manner that limits the use of good judgment and common sense in matters not foreseen or covered by the plan or any appendices and annexes.
EMERGENCIES (accidents, chemical leaks, odors and spills, fire and smoke conditions, floods, gas leaks and odors, medical emergencies, including both psychiatric and unknown causes) must be reported to the Amherst College Police Department. College emergency phone number stickers (orange) have been placed on most common area phones across the campus, and are available for posting on your office or room telephones. Stickers may be requested by contacting the Amherst College Police Department at (413) 542-2291. In addition, the emergency numbers are posted in telephone directories, Campus Security Act Compliance Documents, and referred to during all crime prevention and health and safety training seminars.
Emergency call boxes are also located throughout the campus and will dial the ACPD directly with a push of a single HELP button. These emergency phones are clearly marked by a visible blue light.
Emergencies which require an ambulance, fire and rescue, hazardous materials response or additional police assistance or response should all be handled initially by the Amherst College Police Department Dispatch Center by calling (413) 542-2111.
