Overview

1. What is “My Profile”?

”My Profile” is the latest version of the Amherst College Biographical Record, a series that dates back to 1881 and has been published in almost every decade, most recently in 1993. As with the previous print editions of the Biographical Record, the information collected reflects the College’s pride in the accomplishments of the individuals associated with the institution, and collecting this information complements the College’s own historical record. Most importantly, the compilation of these individual (self-submitted), brief, biographical profiles will continue to illustrate that the enduring strength and legacy of the College lies with its graduates.

2. How is this electronic version different from previous print versions?

Unlike previous Biographical Records, this version is structured as an electronic database. In other words, updating one’s own biographical information online can be done as often as individual alumni see fit. Ultimately, however, as with the earlier print editions of the Amherst College Biographical Record, the success of this electronic record will continue to depend on the collective alumni participation to update their personal records.

3. What are the benefits of creating an electronic Biographical Record?

There are several advantages. First, the collection of individual information is facilitated by an online form that alumni can update at their convenience. Second, updated information is readily available and searchable. Third, any information you choose to share in your Profile or Additional information will be part of a larger online resource that can facilitate interactions between all members of the Amherst community.

4. Why are you doing this now?

Because of the proliferation of electronic information and communication, an electronic version is the most appropriate evolution of the College’s Biographical Record. For the past several years, the Amherst alumni online directory has served as a small stepping-stone towards an electronic record of information until now. This electronic version will supplant the previous Amherst alumni online directory as the primary means for alumni to update their information and search for other alumni.

5. What is the Amherst Career Network?

The Amherst Career Network is an online resource connecting current students and recent graduates with alumni for the purpose of career guidance. Participating alumni share their experiences and give advice on specific jobs, general career paths, educational opportunities and other issues that arise for students and postgraduates. The purpose of the Career Network is to guide, inform and refer; the Network is not intended as a job-search tool.

6. In what ways can I participate in the Amherst Career Network?

There are a number of ways to participate in this program and the time commitment of your participation is entirely up to you. For example, alumni may engage in informal conversations (in person, through e-mail or by phone), offer shadowing opportunities in which students observe alumni in the workplace, or provide short- or long-term internship.

Simply edit the information in the Profile tab and follow these steps:

Step 1: Make sure we have your most current contact and employment information.

Step 2: Add new information or update your job description, career history, and any additional information about your career.

Step 3: Select the types and forms of guidance you are willing to provide.

Step 4: Set your privacy settings to share this information with students and alumni.

Updating “My Profile”

1. Why should I update my profile?

The information you provide updates the current and past aspects of your life that the College uses to updates its own records and can be shared with other members of the Amherst community. As previously mentioned, this electronic version also builds upon previous Biographical Records and adds to the historical record of the College itself.

2. How will my information be used?

The information you provide will be used for College related purposes and for building an online network of the Amherst community. Your contact information will be used for Amherst College correspondence, such as the notification of College news or communication about class reunions. Other information you provide (and choose to share) will enhance the College’s community enabling various constituencies to interact with one another, such as current students contacting alumni in the Career Network.

3. What if I do not want to share any of my information?
